Editorial: PodCast... anyone interested?

So up until very recently, I was distinctly sceptical of the point of 'PodCasts' (for those who don't know, these are like website 'Radio Shows').

However, over the past week or so, I have been thinking about how I spend about an hour and a half in the car each day where it would be really cool to be able to listen to a Windows Mobile related 'show'.

So my question is this...

I have been thinking about the possibility of launching a 'MoDaCo PubCast' :D

The idea would be that once a week (or maybe bi-weekly), I would create a recorded show, recorded in a pub, with special guests, that members can download.

Would anyone be interested?

Post thoughts below :D

I would actually be surprised if you didn't. The smartphone is perfect for this. I listen to 3-4 podcasts right now and very few of them are from my favorite sites. I would be the first to sync you up to my phone. I am an american and most of the carrier stuf isn't relevent but the stuff that is is some of the best on the net. I for one am looking forward to this. I truely believe the Ipod killer is the smartphone. Thanks.

8) A MoDaCo "Pubcast" would be extremely cool. Listening to one of my favorite (favourite  ) topics, from a key website, recorded in an off the cuff, non-scripted (mayby roughly outlined) setting would be an entertaining experience for anyone listening. Go Go GO! :D

Thanks for not using the "POD" part of a phrase that normally makes me cringe with thoughts of amateur radio broadcast made for no other reason than "because I can".

Time to redefine the term and watch the others follow.

QUESTION: Why dont sites (especially those related to MS products) stream audio via WMP instead of of providing LARGE downloads that are next to impossible to download via the mobile device itself? I know rates are higher there overseas and you dont have many UNLIMITED DATA options...but isnt this the kind of thing that will seperate MS devices from the iPod when it comes to this feature?

This will be great ! By the way i agree with encece , wma is perfect for the purpose and the small size is crucial .

Go podcast go!

That would be good paul but only if you record it on normal mode and not slow mode as msmobiles does , guess beersoft will be the weekly guest as well :D :D :D

I'd go for it, as long as I can find some software to go with it. Would Ilium work ?

I'd listen to it... Maybe whilst also in a pub!! (As long as it didnt detract from the drinking!)

sounds brilliant...

since itll be chat and not music, a super low quality (6kbps for instance) WMA that can be streamed from the site will be perfect.

(wma at that quality is suprisingly good actually - about the same as mp3 at 48kbps)

It'll definitely be available as MP3 or Windows Media...

Interestingly, i've been thinking about which hardware I need to make this happen, and actually my digital camcorder is probably the best recording device, which opens up the whole possibility of an MP3/WMA version and a WMV MoDaCoTV version :D

I got to thinking about this, and wondered if it'd even be possible to record it using a smartphone, if you got a good quality mic, and an adaptor. Isn't there software out there to enable better quality recording?

I'd be interested if it could be interactive.

What about the option to phone in questions (a bit like the old Chat channels - are they still going on?) and have the answers covered by the "pros". Of course we don't know what sort of "pros" you get in your local :D

AFAIK you still can't record both sides of a voice call on a Smartphone, so you might want to look at getting a Symbian device to do the recording :D (you listening Jackass?)

I'd listen. But it doesn't sound like a good idea to record in a (possibly loud) pub environment. Unless it's a rural local pub on a monday evening.. or morning.

Hehe, don't worry, the environment would be suitably quiet... it's just the unique 'pub' idea and the concept of making it nice and informat that i'm trying to capture here :D

Paul just record some pub sounds for infill between items, for that authentic feel.

Yeah, go for it! We, humans, have only 6 senses and now, by viewing modaco.com, users use only 2 (touch to move mouse and sight to observe). Adding one more sense - hearing - would be good way to reach people. Many people are commuting to work over 1 hour daily and this time could be spent on listening to the modaco podcast pubcast.

I could also elaborate quoting theory of intelligence that says that neocortex (part of our brain) processes 2 types of patterns: spatial and temporal, and that temporal patterns, which are dominant in audio recordings, are more valuable for associative memory than spatial patterns (from sight) but it would be probably boring... so I just would like to say: "one picture is worth 1000 words, but one podcast is worth million words".

Anyone else reckon this is just an excuse for Paul to go to the pub and get hammered? :D
