Guest lewinb Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Hi, I am in the process of doing this right now... You basically have to find a friend/family member who is a Cingular customer (preferably with a contract). Some people have said that you can email Cingular at somehting like simunlockcode@Cingular, but I have never heard of this actually working, and have also heard that this address isn't even active anymore. I'm on T-mobile also, so I am having my dad do it... He's been with Cingular since 1995 (god knows why). So far, we've had to call 5 times, and it's taken over two weeks since we started tryng to get it. I think we may have finally got the right person on the phone this evening. We'll see... He said we should receive the code as early as tomorrow. The first person we talked to said (after an HOUR of BS) that they had submitted a request for the code to tech support, and that they would email it within five days. They never sent it. Have them call customer support 1-866-cingular and tell customer support that they need this phone unlocked because they will be traveling out of the country (they might ask where, so be ready and DON'T say something like Canada or Mexico), and need to have the phone unlocked, so that he can put a foreign prepaid sim in. When they call, they will need to identify themselves and tell the rep that it is THEIR phone, newly bought on ebay. They MUST have the IMEI number ready to give to the rep. This is on both the box and the phone underneath the battery. You need to specify that you want the SIM SUBSIDY UNLOCK CODE, not the PUK, or PIN unlock code. Every time you call, they will try to give you one of these other codes. Some of the reps will act as thought they don't even know what a sim subsidy unlock code is. Be insistent and polite; ask that they speak with a supervisor. Write down the name and ID of everyone you speak with, and the time. BE PREPARED: Cingular will give you the royal runaround before giving you the code. They will tell you: 1. they "don't give those out"... This is a lie. Tell them that you have read on the internet that Cingular's policy is that they do give customers unlock codes to people who have a contract, or have had service for 90 days. AND that you have a right to it, as a Cingular customer, and you didn't spend 300 dollars on a quad-band phone Not to take it abroad. Going overseas is a LEGITIMATE reason to need the code. 2. "You have to get it from the Manufacturer." This is subterfuge. Tell them that you have already called the manufacturer, and the manufacturer said that only the carrier can give you the sim subsidy unlock code. 3. "That has to come from Tech support, and we can't contact them directly." This is only partly true. They should offer to send an email to Tech, with the appropriate info for them to get the code. MAKE SURE that you ask them to send it to you via email... If you give them a phone number, they will only call it once, (although they will tell you they give it three tries), and they won't leave a message. Apparently, regular cust service people can't, but SOME (not all) supervisors can. I'll try to post pack here in a few days with any news...
