Guest bill door Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I've got (as well as my Jam) an Ipaq 1940 which doesnt ship with a cradle. I did order a refurb unit but it's remained unused as I've found Remote Display Control from MS. It basically gives you a window on your PC that shows the screen of your PDA. You can click on stuff with your mouse and even use your keyboard to enter contacts/write emails. Anyone else use it?!
Guest dombates Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Yep. It rocks. Using up my 200 free text messages/month a lot quicker now while I'm in the office...

And where exactly is this alternative to a cradle you are referring to?
Guest MitchellO Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I think they mean it lets you use your PDA while on your desk without having to hold it up. Not exactly what the title implies.
Guest bill door Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 (edited) I think they mean it lets you use your PDA while on your desk without having to hold it up. Not exactly what the title implies. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well to me it is an alternative- what do you use a cradle for? Using your pda whilst at a desk (one handed/without having to hold it). This piece of software means that you don't even have to touch your PDA to use it- it therefore acts as a bona fide substitute to a cradle because it substitutes the function of a cradle. I'll try an illustration. Travelling somewhere by train is an alternative to using a car. A train isn't a car though is it? Likewise a piece of software isn't a pda cradle but it is an alternative to one- it allows the same benefit to be achieved via a different method. Shesh, you guys. Try to be helpful and this is what I get in return :D /walks away muttering to himself Edited April 6, 2005 by bill door
Guest MitchellO Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 ?????????? anyway, i want a cradle so that the pda is standing up, not lying on my desk. somewhere i can just sit it without mucking around with charge cables. somewhere the display is at a viewable angle. This "alternative" doesn't do that, but if it works for you, go ahead!

View angle is not relevant as you get your "view" on the monitor screen. I take it you've never tried the software then? Once I did my cradle has sat gathering dust :D
Guest MitchellO Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Yes I have, and it works fine, just doesn't replace my PDA screen. I mean, I don't particularly want to have a screen on my laptop dedicated to my PDA, when I have one on the PDA itself. i charge via usb and a cradle would be great. I could charge and sync while having my pda viewable.

I just didn't think your comment " Not exactly what the title implies." was exactly fair, hence I tried to explain further for those (unlike dombates who seemed to know what I meant) that didn't get it.
Guest En_croute Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Well, I think it looks great. I can play games at work, on the MDA, and pretend I'm working !!
Guest kurtfhouse Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I can't seem to get it to work on my Jam, I just get a plain blank window and then an error message when I close it. Am at a loss I followed all the read me instructions??????? Sounds like just what I'm looking for aswell Any ideas? Cheers people
Guest GothTeddy Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 it should Just Work™ plug in, start the app on phone, start app on pc, enjoy…
Guest kurtfhouse Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Weird, will have a bit more of a fiddle with it then but I'll have to leave it if I get no joy.
Guest bill door Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 it should Just Work™ plug in, start the app on phone, start app on pc, enjoy… <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Other way round isn't it? Start it on your pc, then ppc. It doesn't work with some of the newer IPAQs but works fine with my Jam and IPAQ 1940 :D
Guest FloatingFatMan Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Weird, will have a bit more of a fiddle with it then but I'll have to leave it if I get no joy. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> All you should need to do is start the app on the PC, then the phone & tap Connect on the phone... Works everytime on my PC...
Guest moosery Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I dont have to start it on the phone...
