Guest MTDude Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 Hi, SMT 5600 unlocked from AT&T, use on the T-Mobile network, Southern California. Here is the deal. I get the triangle that says I am roaming. So I was told to do this... "Check unders Start / Settings / Phone / Networks. Then press Menu / Preferred Networks. Move these up/down until T-Mo is at the top of the list. It should then default to T-Mo." Well, when I do this about 30 diff. T-Mobile networks come up. My question to the learned MoDaCo family is this... Do any of you know the correct network/# that I should put at the top of this "preferred network"? The home screen says Cingular, but I can still make and receive calls, no problem, but I would like to be on the correct T-Mobile one. Thanks, MTDude
Guest martin Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 If you want to force your phone to access one particular network then you can change Network selection to Manual and then use Select a Network.
Guest Cylon Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 What is it with the message of "incorrect password" when you are done trying to change these preferred network settings??? Basically, if someone smart on this network stuff could give us the basics on network selection.... Thanks Cylon

Network 31017 is the Cingular AND T-Mobile network in Southern California, which was owned and operated by Cingular until very recently. All T-Mobile phones have a special override in them to force the name of that network to be "T-Mobile" instead of "Cingular", which is why only unlocked phones see this. FYI, you can change the network name to "T-Mobile" pretty easily. Go into the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RIL\OperatorNames\ and create a new String Value key named "31017". Make the value of the key "T-Mobile" and reboot your phone. When it comes up, it'll show "T-Mobile" as the network name. You'll still have the roaming triangle on the home screen though.

Unless I can do this on the phone and am looking in the wrong area. Thanks for the info.

Guest MTDude Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 Any one will do or are some better than others? Smartphone reg editors that is
Guest sixonenine619 Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I live in san diego and i have had the same problem with my e200 and now my audiovox smt 5600. Its been explained to be a few different ways, basically that cingular owns the cell site, or owned, and it hasnt had its name changed or something stupid to that affect. or it could be that it is actually a cingular tower. In any case it doesnt matter so long as you have the nationwide plans... I had asked tmobile about this before. They said dont worry about it.
