Ok, if using a cradle or a synch cable to synch data, I do this everyday and very often. My question is this, will it in the long run affect my battery? Considering it might over charge, no?

lithium batteries does not have memory effect issues, however, they can only be charged for some certain number(varies according to the battery, generally changes between 200-400 charge cycles). Every time you plug you phone to the power adaptor or sync cable, you use one cycle. Motorola's battery probably has some 200 cycles before starting to degrade.

So, no you cannot overcharge battery but you use one cycle everytime you plug it in, regardless of how full the battery is.

My suggestion is, use infrared or bluetooth for sync. , but don't be over protective for the battery. If you do not charge it to save the battery life, you can run out of battery in the middle of the road at midnight when you're car is dead(murphy rules) which beats the purpose.

I guess the best way is getting a spare battery and rotate them.

leaving the phone plugged in for an extended period does no harm. This is because after the phone is fully charged the phone is powered purely by the external suppy hence the battery does not cycle in a way that will degrad battery performance.

It is true that plugging the phone in will cycle the battery, but if the phone is more or less full when you do this it doesnt significantly harm the battery (think of it as not taking a full cycle), only a percentage of the cells will cycle.

All that said you dont really have to consider the number of cycles used in the battery as the battery easily outlasts the phone. That is unless you fully discharge the battery, or get it wet.

It would be pointless buying a spare battery.
