Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 As you would imagine... I get a lot of e-mail spam. Actually, not a lot, A LOT. Thousands of messages every day... Thankfully, I run Microsoft Exchange, and have excellent Spam Filtering software (GFI MailEssentials, a new version of which was released today in fact!) Unfortunately, a lot of my fellow Mobile Devices users are not in the same position to have server side filtering, and so end up PAYING (in the form of data costs) for all this Spam. I've thought on many occasions about writing a SpamAssasin-filtering-POP-IMAP-proxy, but of course never actually had time to do anything :D So my question is... how does everyone else get around Mobile Email Spam? A seperate account? Careful control of e-mail addresses? Does it work? Let's share the knowledge people... :D P
Guest confused and hungover Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 i have sadly been unable to activate any kind of email account on my phone. i also lack Enthusiasm which stops me from actually doing anything about it. that seems to be the best spam filter there is.
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I have my own domain, and have a couple of POP mailboxes defined. Anything that comes in that is not sent to one of the "physical" mailboxes gets diverted to a mailbox called spam.trap. Every site I have to regsiter at gets a made up email address like [email protected], so I can spot where the spam is coming from. I can setup aliases and redirect them to my main account, so when I know that I want to receive emails from that person/site they come through to the main account, which is what actually gets downloaded to my phone. It's extremely successful - only a few of my "wanted" emails ever get to the spam trap (which I only download on the PC), and no spam at all now gets through to my phone
Guest muddy250 Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 took me ages to get my e-mail to work, eventually managed it but then I got the first bill for GPRS. I don't bother anymore! No more spam! Of course I realise this doesn't help much... i have sadly been unable to activate any kind of email account on my phone. i also lack Enthusiasm which stops me from actually doing anything about it. that seems to be the best spam filter there is. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Guest tsutton Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I own my domain & server, therefore all spams gets filtered before arriving to my Inbox. Of course, not all spams are caught... Thankfully I download headers first before marking them as full download or delete to save GPRS costs!

Mine is set up to download headers only and when there are some emails that you want to read, you mark it to be downloaded full. That saved me money on GPRS.
Guest Davka Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I've got 2 accounts. One public (usenet, warez sites, MoDaCo :-) with good anti-spam filtering built-in. And one private (for my friends, bank, work etc). If you don't put your e-mail into Usenet, www sites that doesn't hide e-mail address and stupid people you will probably don't get spam. For me it works :D
Guest bronksy Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I have 2 mail accounts. I have my main accound (the catchall address from my website and all other mail). I then have another address (rickmobile) that I use on my mobile devices. I have had this set up as an IMAP4 account. On my C500 this mail account is connected to Duality push email, but I can also use the built in C500 client. This has several benefits for me. I can happily delete mails from my rickmobile account and not have issues with windiws mobile setting the wrong mail to be deleted from the server. Because this is IMAP4 the C500 can download the headers/or just 1k of the mail only (as with pop3) but the BIG difference is that you can see how big the mail is before you download it, the C500 tells you the rest of the file size, saving on downloading big emails if you don't need to. My ISP has spam filtering set up that sends detected spam to a bulk folder. I still get spam, but maybe 10 messages a day and not 1000. I find this the best way to make sure none of my messages get lost anywhere in the great windows moble world. When I get back to the office (or on webmail) I download my mail as usual from my mail account.
Guest Confucious Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Believe it or not, the spam filtering on hotmail is actually very good now and, of course I only download headers and so I can delete the few that do get through. I also have my own domains where I don't give out my email address much and when I do I use "dummy" addresses as described elsehere in this thread.
Guest MECX Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 www.fastmail.fm i only rarely get spam using those guys, also only download headers ;-)
Guest muddy250 Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Yep but it took so much messing around I ended up spending a lot before I learned how to avoid it! I only use it now if I'm away from any PC's I can get mail on and am expecting something important. Doesn't stop the spamming tho does it! Did you set it up to download the full e-mails? Mine is set up to download headers only and when there are some emails that you want to read, you mark it to be downloaded full. That saved me money on GPRS. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Guest xenophobe Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 (edited) Thunderbird is very good at filtering spam once you teach it... I know a few people who do a LOT of emails.... who receive many thousands a day... most of them agree that POPFile is the best, and I've heard that it's better than 98-99% once you train it. For the mobile, I have a seperate, private email, and I rarely if ever give it out. It's unpublished, and will remain so. I've yet to get a single spam email on my phone, well except for Cingular SMSing me. Edited April 6, 2005 by xenophobe
Guest pisquee Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 www.spamarrest.com picks up mail via pop3 from your mail account, and then it sits on their server for you to download. Though only approved mail addresses get through to you. Senders can approve themselves (i.e. to prove they are an actual person!) or you can approve addresses (and domains) on a before hand basis, or by checking the list of unverified mail. You can also black list addresses (and domains) so they get deleted imediately.
Guest Hainsey Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I use my free Orange email address and rarely get spam (apart from the late night crap I sometimes sign up for :D) Also Thunderbird from Mozilla Click Here claims to eradicate all spam before it reaches you inbox (and it's completley free)
Guest nedge2k Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Well i have 2 main accounts...the addresses of which are know only to a select few...yet its still spam central. Although my gmail account is the worst, everything goes through Outlook 2k3 and it seems to catch the majority. Cant even get email via GPRS on O2 PAYG :@
Guest yoos Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I use hotmail on my phone (via the MoDaCo benefit ;-) ) and don't get much spam at all.
Guest PayableOnDeath Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) I must be lucky I dont get much spam, infact only one of my email account gets loads of spam all thou I think that the ISP gaves out email addys to spamers as everone I know that has a email account with this isp gets loads of spam on them am not goin to say the ISP's name (unless am allowed to :D ) am glad I dont use them anymore thou :D all my other accounts are fine well my btopenworld picks up 99.9% of the spam and puts it in a nice spam folder so I dont download it so am happy :D Edited April 7, 2005 by payableondeath
Guest moosery Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I had to ditch my old 20-spam-a-day email address for a new one, which is, as yet, spam free. It's really ***** annoying....even when you have free orange GPRS in the meantime, and downloading headers doesn't cost much anyway - we still dont want to be bothered by "cialis" or a "fantastic refinance deal" all the time. Talk about invasion of privacy, never mind cost..
Guest Jakob Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 hmm... I get A LOT of spam too.. Even with spamfilters on my Exchangeserver and on my POP3 which forwards to my exchangeserver, some of them gets through to my inbox. And about 20 spammails pr day ends up in my unwanted mails folder. Now; we are ~80000 members @ MoDaCo - what about a lawsuit against those SPAMmers for using time on our GPRS ?? Lets say the price of the lawsuit is = 200000$ - then it is only 2,5$ per member. I would gladly use 2,5$ suing the crap out of someone for spamming my phone. How would like to arrange it? /Jakob
Guest RoVal1972 Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Hello everybody ! Since you brought this subject into disscusion, could anyone tell me how can I set my SPV to receive emails from my email box(es) (hotmail, yahoo, gmail or my personal one) ?!? Thanks a lot ! Best ! VM
Guest someone Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I used to have a lot of spam on my Orange mobile email adress (with the @orange.nl domain). For no reason I was bothered with information and offers of several useless products and stuff. What I did was I changed the email adress by replacing my initials + last name to just the first character of my first name + last name followed by the domain, which is possible at Orange Netherlands without losing your inbox and contacts (just like changing your username at a website community). Ok, I had to send a mail to all my contacts to let them know I have a new email adress, but after that I never received spam again on the adress. No one but my contacts know the adress and I never left it at sites, so that's maybe a good tip to avoid spam. Never left your adress on the net and use a special spam adress (hotmail for example) to log yourselves on at sites etc. Hope this might help for some people Cheers!
Guest ellischaplin Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 You can view gmail now in not fully supported browsers. The one I have seen it working on is the Opera Beta for the SPV C500. Works a treat, and my experience with gmail is that very little spam gets through, and anything that does is hidden in the spam directory which is automatically deleted=D
