Guest Zone-MR Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I've started work on a new project - a phone client which monitors nearby GSM cells, and transmits this information to a server. Take a look at my signature for a small demo of what can be done with this :D Please post any suggestions and/or comments.
Guest nedge2k Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Anyone else seeing the potential for tracking friends (read victims )? :D
Guest beersoft Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) this we can use for evil linking it to maps.google.com sat images would be cool :D later Owen * nedge2k finds humour in the smallest things Edited April 7, 2005 by beersoft
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 The trouble is CellIDs are too vague for accurate tracking. There are companies in the UK (and probably elsewhere) that offer a "locate a phone"-type service, based on Cell IDs, but depending on the density of masts in a given area the results are inaccurate at best - certainly not good enough for real tracking. When I tried it the best accuracy I got was about 300m out, and the worst was 1.4Km
Guest Zone-MR Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) Yeah, CellIDs aren't GPS coordinates. They won't tell you which exact street you are on. However, they are perfectly sufficient for giving you (or others) your general location (eg Home, Work, City Centre, etc). This information can be used to perform actions automatically when you enter pre-set locations. For example, when you approach your work, your phone can automatically switch to meeting mode. When you leave the office, your computer can automatically lock itsself. I'm planning on adding a few features to increase the positioning accuracy even further. For example the TA (Timing Advance) value is an accurate measure of your distance from a cell tower (calculated based on the time it takes for radio packets to reach the tower). The TA values of several nearby cells could narrow down your location quite significantly. Edited April 7, 2005 by Zone-MR
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Ah, now this is different: The client can be configred to automatically perform certain actions when the phone location changes. For example, CellTrack can be configured to automatically switch your phone to silent when entering work, or to divert all calls to your home line when you are at home. My bold CellTrack TinyGPS does a similar thing, but is quite limited in what actions it can actually perform: * Change home screen - changes home screen to chosen one * Change profile - switches to desired profile * Play sound (alarm) - plays chosen wav file * Power off - switches the phone off * Vibrate - makes your phone vibrate * Notify - notify you when you enter or leave specified location * Switch Bluetooth - switches Bluetooth on/off/discoverable TinyGPS
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I guess it's going to be different for everyone, depending on the service in their area, but the TA thing sounds interesting. Can I make a suggestion: Make it perform as many different actions as you can. Useful ones would be good! (changing homescreen is not going to much more than a novelty), and if possible let it run scripted actions (do this, do that, do the other) For me triggering pre-written SMS messages would be useful, cos I could then interact with the SMS system at work.
Guest agent.m Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 The reason why its called smartphone :D this is cool
Guest Zone-MR Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 (edited) I've added some more screenshots to the CellTrack demo page. Actions upon entering/leaving cells are not yet supported, but will be coming shortly. The CellTrack phone software will always remain free and open source. The web-based service for displaying your location in signatures will be availible for a very small monthly fee. All users who participate in the trail will have £10 credited to their CellTrack account, so they can continue using the service free-of-charge even when the trial is over. Guest Rampe Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Looks incredible. Hopefully you get this to work with other smartphones too, for example mpx200 :-)
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Me too, tried it on my E200 it launches and stays open for 5 seconds then closes by itself :D
Guest Zone-MR Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Here's a screenie: Download the beta here: http://celltrack.spv-developers.com/?act=download
Guest Rampe Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Do you know if it's even possible to widen the supported models to, for example, e200 or mpx200? Wouldn't want to keep my hopes up if there's no chance whatsoever.
Guest martin Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Any chance that you could give an option to use a local cell database i.e from an SD card :D Great app BTW
Guest crypto1969 Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Will U be releasing a version for the Moto' MPx220 or 200 ? Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Tried the latest version on my E200 and it closes immediately :D
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Beta3 working fine on my C500 Can we request stuff? 1) Manual update, so changes to the database get shown on phone 2) Configurable update frequency (how often does it update the database currently?) 3) Searchable online database of CellIDs in due course, there are quite a few in there now and finding "yours" is getting harder Good stuff though. Looking forward to cell-based actions!
Guest revolution.cx Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 It would be great if the data from www.cellspotting.com could somehow be integrated as they already have data for 18000+ cell antennas.
Guest dboy.spv Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Here's a screenie: Download the beta here: http://celltrack.spv-developers.com/?act=download <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi...I'm working on the windows mobile 2003 platform (e200 spv) and would like to get the phones' location info and write it to a txt file. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?
Guest James Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Try asking at the Cell Track Forum mate:- http://www.spv-developers.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=12

Guest Rampe Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Will this work on the Moto' MPx220 or MPx200? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nope. Atleast not yet. I've been doing some research with MPx200 but I can't find the memory offset with cellid and LAC...
