Guest kev51773 Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 (edited) I've just ordered by MDA Compact and I believe it should be waiting for me when I get home. Could anyone recommend what and where to purchase the following 1) GPS Reciever - I'm not really all that bothered about bluetooth as I'tll probably spend all its time connected to power anyway so I might as well have an extra wire. 2) Car cradle - Preferably something including power and allowing access to whatever port the gps receiver requires. I'll be using TomTom3 software if that makes any difference. Any other good gps/cradle solutions welcome also. Basically I dont want to have to mess about charging things, I want everything to be powered in car. Edited April 8, 2005 by kev51773

Basically I dont want to have to mess about charging things, I want everything to be powered in car. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I found that the tomtom bluetooth receiver was about the same price as a wired one and gave better reception than my old pretec wired gps, also has a lion battery in it that lasts for upto 8 hrs, you can pick one up on ebay for about £75. I have mine hard wired into the cars fuse box (butchered a tomtom car charger to do it, only £6.00 so not that bothered) and it sits on its nice magnetic plate on the dash right upto the screen, if i want to take it with me when i get out of the car it easily unplugs and goes in my pocket for on foot navigation (came in really handy when me and the missus got lost in venice) . As far as a cradle goes i use a standard (although the biggest version) magnetic phone holder, comes as 2 bits one thin metal strip u stick to the back of your phone (looks dark in the pic but its practicaly the same colour as the mda)and a magnetic disk (approx 1 1/2 inch diameter) that you stick to your dash somewhere, nice and neat and very cheap (about £5.00 from most mobile stores) , as the mda is nice and light it holds very well and has never fallen off, ive driven over speed bumps at 30+ and it stays put (used same mount for my c500 and asus ppc which is much heaver than the mda).Power the mda with standard car charger but ive manged trips of 5+hrs on the battery without need for charge. Have a look at the pics and see for yourself (sorry for the blurry pics its freezing here and i was shivering like sh****g dog). You can see the tomtom gps on the dash right up against the screen.
