Guest adamh Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Hi, Question as subject really - has anyone done a backup and a restore onto a clean/new/reset phone? Did you keep your text messages? I ask because they're sending me a replacement handset, and I wanted to copy everything across. The lady I spoke to at orange was unaware of a backup function on the phone. They're replacing my phone because I'm having the problem where your phone reports that you've got 1-2 bars of signal, but you can't send/receive messages or calls. However if you then turn your phone off then on it magically starts working again. When this happened again to me today I discovered that I could browse the web over gprs, but not make or receive calls! freaky. Has anyone else had this problem? Cheers, Adam
Guest adamh Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 ok, just seen this: http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1802& Yes, I was silly not to check, but just did a backup and a hard reset, then restore. But now I've lost all my SMSs, some I wanted to keep!! Why is there no way to back them up, neither by Activesync nor via Backup. Aargh! So it seems likely that i'll lose my text messages. Does anyone know if they're stored in a place on the phone that can be saved over the usb link? Adam
Guest magic_peanuts Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Get Active Sync running, then goto IPSMMAPI and copy all the .mpb files onto your computer. Hard reset, then copy them back.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 Get Active Sync running, then goto IPSMMAPI and copy all the .mpb files onto your computer. Hard reset, then copy them back. That only stores the text of sent messages though (not even dates) ;) I think the rest are stored in a Win CE database somewhere. The file cemail.vol in IPSM might have something to do with it, but the SPV won't let you look at it!
Guest rcraswell Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 I'll look into (no promises ;)) adding email/SMS backup to Orange Backup for a future update. --ron
Guest adamh Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 Email backup is less important (for me at least), and you can always synchronise with outlook to retain them. Unfortunately sms&mms are excluded from this sync, so having them saved via orange backup would be good. In fact I'd go as far as saying that it's obvious and should have been included all along. Other than posting bugs/suggestions in the Bug Track forum here, has anyone had any success with contacting Orange directly with this sort of issue? Adam
Guest Lojt Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 It sucks that there are no way to manage sms's on the sim card (copy to or delete)
Guest HelloDave Posted January 17, 2003 Report Posted January 17, 2003 I'll look into (no promises ) adding email/SMS backup to Orange Backup for a future update. But then we'll have to update and lose the ability to run unsigned apps. Damn! And will updating via Orange Update to get the revised Orange Update reset our SMSs anyway?
Guest rcraswell Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 But then we'll have to update and lose the ability to run unsigned apps. Damn!Unfortunately, I can neither confirm nor deny any rumours as to the content of any upcoming updates. All I can do is recommend that you don't assume you know anything. 8) And will updating via Orange Update to get the revised Orange Update reset our SMSs anyway? Most likely not. ROM updates flash the various regions of the ROM (of course, I'm using the term "ROM" fairly loosely here) but do not effect IPSM. This means that your generally your data and various configuration settings are uneffected. Of course, a specific update may actively modify IPSM to achieve a particular goal, but this is not intrinsic to the update process.
Guest rcraswell Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 I haven't said anything that isn't publicly available information (if you dig around enough.)
Guest HelloDave Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 Very good answer Ron. You don't work in P.R. or for the government in your spare time by any chance?
