Guest doggystyle69 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 (edited) hi all, firstly just want to say how excellent this forum is and hello to all that inhabit modaco :D i am a huge gadget freak but new to the smartphone world, so i thought i would start off with a cheaper mpx200 before upgrading to something with more features. I have purchased an AT&T mpx200 running sp2002 from ebay and is supposed to be unlocked (well the advertisement said it was/is). After inserting my sim card i get no service, i am in australia which runs on the 900 band, after checking in programs/phone settings i have selected 900/1800 as the preferred band. also in programs/telephony/networks it will find all of the australian mobile phone networks (optus, telstra, vodafone, etc) but still get no service.... i am wondering if it really is unlocked as when powering up the phone it shows the windows 2002 screen then a screen which says 'mobile operator' before the homescreen loads up. (please forgive my ignorance if this makes no difference) if the phone does need to be unlocked, i wont hesitate using the www.imei-check.co.uk site to unlock it but thought i would check with everyone here first as i have no knowledge of this phone at all. if i do need to unlock it, will it be a problem if i dont have another sim card to unlock it with? i recieved the phone without a data cable or software, but i downloaded activesync 3.8 from microsoft and the cable from my sony cybershot digital camera works fine with the phone, and does connect to my pc. am i missing out on any important software from the motorola cd? would i just need to maybe get an australian version of windows 2002 for it? sorry if all my questions sound stupid, im a complete newbie when it comes to smartphones and i would greatly appreciate any assistance in getting my phone up and running. looking forward to contributing to this forum regards, con. Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Welcome to the site :D If you have an AT&T MPX200 it will only be dual band and will unfortunately not work on the 900 band. Only a few (very few) of the original AT&T phones were triband and this was by mistake. Unfortunately there is no way to make the phone triband as it is a hardware configuration and not software.
Guest doggystyle69 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 you can select from 1900, 900/1800... this is not a tri-band?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Not necessarily, as the phone may have been updated with the leaked 2002 rom. If the phone does not ask for a SIM unlock code then it will probably be unlocked. Best thing is to check with a SIM from another network in your area that is not on the 900 band.
Guest doggystyle69 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 hmm... thats a bit hard when everything in australia runs off 900.... any aussies out there have any knowledge on this??
Guest doggystyle69 Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 anyone wanna buy an mpx 200 then??? im a bit dissapointed...
