Guest Dade Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 There have been a few posts about the Exchange always up to date (AUTD) service and getting this to work with Smartphones or Pocket PC's. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information about how to set this up and which operators support SMTP to SMS. I have been talking to Orange over the past few days and most people at Orange don't even know what Im talking about when I mention AUTD. Those that understand it suggest that its an unsupported system in Exchange. I have AUTD set up on my exchange server and its 'Almost' working. My problem appears to be that Orange are not forwading the up to date notification messages to my mobile number. I thought this might be becasue I need to have the service enabled for my account or that I have the wrong gateway address but as no one at Orange seems to know anything Im a bit stuck! Basically I would like to hear from anyone that has this set up on their Exchange server expecially if you are an Orange customer. Im planning to put together a definitive 'This is how you do it' guide so any insights would be helpful! Thanks!
Guest mr_end Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Try reading this post here. It does not give you any settings but it might help you a bit.
Guest Dade Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Thanks for that. I have seen that thread already. I would really like to hear from anyone who is currently using this service as it would appear that Orange have removed it!
Guest mr_end Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 I wish I could use it but I only have exchange 2000. :D
Guest Dade Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Well despite Orange insisting that the AUDT service wont work and that they dont have a gateway for SMTP to SMS I have the AUTD service working with my Exchange 2003 setup on 2 Pocket PC Phone Edition devices. Now that its up and running Orange still say what I have done is impossible and that I must be using some other network for my trigger messages! Oh well, if they dont provide the service and they dont support it I assume they wont be able to charge me for it!
Guest mr_end Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Any chance of posting how you did it incase any other users have trouble??
Guest Dade Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Any chance of posting how you did it incase any other users have trouble?? I simply set everyting up as per other threads on MoDaCo and help files on the web. The service simply started working last week and has been working ever since!
Guest dh Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I've tried this a few times, never had any success, never got the system text messages. As I understood it it wasn't possible with most uk and EU network operators.

As I understood it it wasn't possible with most uk and EU network operators. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have experienced the same frustration. Repeated calls to Orange have drawn a blank. I did ask the Tech team at Orange to escalate this lack of support for AUTD but I doubt anything will come of it - although a search in google suggests that the new Smartphone due out soon may include support for AUTD. The problem is the lack of an SMTP to SMS gateway. Without one, it can't work. There used to be loads of free ones a few years ago but I guess the increase in Spam resulted in their closure. If mimick what the exchange server does and send an email to <yournumber>@orange.net, you get the following NDR: Recipient: <[email protected]> Reason: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected] I thought I did have it working for a while, but I think it was down to the Smartphone resyncing after losing GPRS coverage. I even went as far as looking for a 3rd party that I could use but they required a logon/pwd in the email which isn't possible (as far as I'm aware). I know there is a MS KB article that explains how to amend the sending address of the AUTD email but not the content. I guess Microsofts desire to make the smartphone a blackberry killer will lead to this crucial feature becoming available sometime soon! Steve

Steve <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have managed to set this up on an outsourced Exchange server, by registering for smtp - sms gateway at www.sms2email.com. It's not the cheapest solution, but no special formatting of the mail is required and it works perfectly on the Orange network (which i am on) in the UK. Aly

Guest spacerace Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 I can confirm I seem to have this working on Orange aswell (I'm using outsourced Exchange server from 4smartphone.net) Didn't do anything special in the setup, just followed the instructions given by 4smartphone.net in setting up ActiveSync via Exchange Server, then set the update frequency in Mobile Schedule to "When items arrive" Activesync then asked for SMS gateway number which I added in as [email protected] (x being prefix, y being number) and on my way to do the school run my phone chimed with a new message and as I took keylock off I saw the GPRS session disconnecting....

Fasthosts support the AUTD feature, but when i try using [email protected], i get no notifications when new mail arrives. When using [email protected] (a subscription is required) all works fine. Does anything need to be set up on my Orange account for this to work? When i send email to [email protected], it bounces back with Recipient: <[email protected]> Reason: 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]. Are you using the full international mobile number or as you would dial it from the UK @orange.net? Any help appreciated, as this is the only way I can get it to work!! Aly
Guest spacerace Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 It looks like you have the correct settings. It's working for me but I find it very intermittent. It will auto update perhaps twice a day by itself, I think the successful delivery rate of the AUTD SMS messages is pretty low.
Guest alykas236 Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 It looks like you have the correct settings. It's working for me but I find it very intermittent. It will auto update perhaps twice a day by itself, I think the successful delivery rate of the AUTD SMS messages is pretty low. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When using sms2email.com i get the updates every time, but with orange.net it never works. Activesync automatically dials at the beginning of the peak period set and also at the end of the peak period, so this may be the auto update it is doing twice each day. Orange have confirmed that the Email to SMS function of orange.net ceased to operate a few months ago. :-(
Guest spacerace Posted July 20, 2005 Report Posted July 20, 2005 Yes that's what I have read, however I have my ActiveSync set to NEVER sync by itself, EXCEPT when "told to do so" by an AUTD SMS and yet maybe 3 or 4 times a day it does suddenly show that there are new messages. Certainly not every time there is a new message in the inbox but it does happen, I figure the server sends the SMS correctly everytime but that the SMS only reaches my phone about 30% of the time. Odd !
Guest neilrlsmith Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 Did this ever get resolved. I am in exactly the same position as spacerace. Am on Orange, use Fasthosts as ms email but Orange do not know anything about AUTD. Does anyone have the settings to use. [email protected] does not work with me in the SMS address field. Thanks
Guest spacerace Posted August 24, 2005 Report Posted August 24, 2005 It's actually got a little better for me, more often during the day it will suddenly show unread messages. I wouldn't say it is bang up to date, but it is definitely working.
Guest neilrlsmith Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 so what exactly are you putting in the SMS address box?
Guest spacerace Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 as you detailed above - [email protected]
Guest jonathanp Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 (edited) anyone had any problems with the sms coming through as a normal message i.e. visible and not causing the phone to sync? I set up a free email account with orange and turned on email alerts and this works fine I get a txt everytime an email is to sent to [email protected] message comes through as "Email alertFrom: Size: 1KBSubject:0d8e985ea104e84fb5e77bba0df1b239-9863cTo listen to email call 123" seems as though the message is cut short as the actual body of the message is "//SCKL040A AwFqAAADxgADBQHDEBG7SocFPwAygJsKVMfYxQEB" is this the normal format for sms emails and if so why doesn't activesync recognise the message? Cheers Jon Edited October 24, 2005 by jonathanp
Guest spacerace Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 I imagine the format is very specific, and the forwarding process adds characters / alters the format enough so that the phone or AS doesn't recognise it anymore.
