Guest dougguk Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 Got my C500 the other day and very pleased with it. Only issue is that the screen has a habit of turning off whilst im using it - e.g I would be typing a text and the screen would turn off! Mashing the keypad turns the screen back on and leaves you where you left off! Happened since the first day and AFTER the firmware update too. Trying to get Orange to send a replacement however is beginning to grind. Apparently I have to wait seven days for their technical team to decide if the phone is faulty or not before they will send a new one out (dont forget this is eating into my 14 day return time). Ive been told that I cant return it to an orange shop to get a replacement. The advisor I spoke to today said it would be quicker to cancel my contract and sign up again to get a new phone!!! WTF - no offer of help, or escalating my call - she just agreed that it would be better to cancel my contract! I really wish I had bought the phone through an orange shop in town. Then I could just walk in - say its faulty - and receive a new one on the spot like I have done in the past. Let this be a warning to those who want to order from orange.co.uk. They seem to distance theirselves from the orange highstreet shops - and viceversa. There - I feel better now! Just have to wait till 8am when disconnections are open.... then pop into town and sign up for a new contract in walk-in shop!
Guest agent.m Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 without sounding silly. when you say the screen would turn off you sure its not one of the power managrment settings ie display time out or backlight :?:
Guest dougguk Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 without sounding silly. when you say the screen would turn off you sure its not one of the power managrment settings ie display time out or backlight :?: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thats what they said when I called them. I thought that too to start with :D But it happens when im pressing the keys. Say im using the menu.... the screen will turn off whilst im scrolling down the menu! Most annoying! Definitely not a time issue as ive set the display time out to "never" in the options. Explained this all to orange too but they still want me to wait a week!
Guest agent.m Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 bad news homes! hope it gets sorted. have you checked the c500 bug section in modaco? someone else may have had this problem. if not its another one to add to the list. :D
Guest brisbane_guy Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 hi i get the same thing on mine too sometimes ill be in a program or writing sms and the screen just goes black like the phones switched itself off. But then I press any key and the screen pops back to life.. very strange.. will be interested in what orange has to say is wrong with ur phone... :D
Guest chucky.egg Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 If you're still within your 14 days why not just take it back to the shop and cancel the contract, then get a new one and try again (with another 14 days)
Guest jporch316 Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 I presumed that buying off the net (from orange) automatically entitled you to go to the orange shop - Is this not the case
Guest bigfootpete Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Yep, almost didn't upgrade because last year when I first signed up to Orange, I had a problem with my MPx200, the operater said they would replace the phone but as they didn't have any stocks I would neeed to phone back next week. I did that and they had no record of my previous conversation (I didn't note her name!) and since I was outside the month long warranty period and had no insurance there was nothing they could do. I was soo pissed off I wanted to swear at her, nothing I said could persuade her so I just slammed the phone down. Only reason I upgraded was to get the C500 free - same tariff (which is pretty good). So I'd say demand a replacement now!!!
Guest dougguk Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 Just to let everyone know - IM STILL WAITING!! I have now phoned orange daily about getting a replacement and keep getting told that someone will call me back! Nothing as yet. No-one ever calls back. This is ridiculous. Now im trying to disconnect and return under the 14 day rule. The phone number either says "We cannot take your call at this time" or "We aim to take your call in approximately 0 seconds". I then hold for 10minutes and give up. What a farce. Love the phone apart from this screen issue - anyone know if its going to be released on another network? Im just going to cancel my direct debit as i havent made a single personal call on the phone since getting it - so im damned if they are going to charge me 14 days linerental when I cancel!!
Guest BigAl94 Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 (edited) Doug, the phone sonds OK to me, thats the way it is, you need to be quicker - it will power down into blank screen to conserve battery after a few secs just flick the joystick and carry on - no problem Edited April 13, 2005 by BigAl94
Guest jakobdam Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 (edited) I have also experienced this "sudden black" phenomenon, and as with the others, the screen lits up when I press any button. I thought it might be a loose connection somewhere, but it bugged me that it didn't do it when I got it. So I made a hard reset. It didn't help though. Then I switched the 256 Mb miniSD I use, to the original 16 Mb. BAM. Problem gone! To me, it sounds like a memory allocating problem, which must be within the ROM. I have the original ROM, which means I haven't updated (thanks to Orange Denmark for closing down). Btw., the 256Mb miniSD I have is also a SANDisk like the original. As it may be something silly like a wait sync or jiggimawillies, it is somewhat annoying. It actually never happens in games that uses the GAPI interface! Strange. :D Edited April 13, 2005 by jakobdam
Guest Confused Stu Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 My screen goes dark mid-something now and again (not often, it's only done it half a dozen times or so). My old SPV original used to do the same thing as well, but quite a bit more often. I've always used the largest sized memory card I could find when I got the phone (256Mb on Classic, 512Mb on C500) and don't know if that's related. Unfortunately, my world is on the card so I'm not going to try a smaller one just for this problem! :D Good idea though. Please could we stop the "it's just the screen timing out" posts? I know how to set my phones up and when the screen goes blank in between two key presses in a text - that's not a timeout issue unless the OS has changed the momentarily changed the timeout to half a second! :D
