Guest seanet Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Hi, Having had a good read through here, it seems there is no way to charge my C500 via USB without A/S being installed. Fair enough. Problem is, Im away in USA for 2 weeks with only my USB cable, and my battery has died before I was able to install A/S on the PC I will be using out here, which means I cannot complete the installation. Anybody any ideas on if I can do anything manually to get this going? What are the relevant registry entries to provide the power to charge? I do have access to my normal PC over a VNC connection, is there any way I can export my A/S settings from there? Thanks.
Guest whos-rog Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 If you can VNC the i'm guessing that you have internet access. If this is the case just go on the Microsoft website and dload active sync for free then just charge as normal. :|

Guest pierre Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Mine's charging here in office without Activesynch. But we have a thin client' system.
Guest Matt Kirby Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 You should be able to charge without installing AS - on a XP machine plug-and-play will see your phone as a "Microsoft USB Sync" device (or something like that) but won't actually do much- and the USB port will dumbly send power to anything attached to it. Try it and see! (P.S. - I have a MPx200, but I doubt that will make any difference).
Guest BrAGoL Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 follow what they're saying!:D if you're only fo charging, then plug it in... :D
Guest Confucious Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 AFAIK the C500 will NOT charge without ActiveSync installed unless you modify the cable by connecting pins 4 & 5. The Mpx's wioll but the C500 won't. You'r only options are to either install ActiveSync (which can be downloaded of the internet) or try and find a charger/car charger for the SMT5600 to buy or mod the cable (you'd have to be a braver man than me to atempt that.) HTH
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Yep you must have Activsync or buy or modify a usb cable to suit.

I cannot turn it on and so windoze does not detect it as a device. Activesync install wont complete until it detects the device. I wonder if I installed the driver manually... could somebody post it please? Thanks

I've just got a new laptop and installed ActiveSync, plugged in the phone, it was recognised and works. No driver from the CD. Once you've installed ActiveSync without creating a partnership doesn't it start charging? If not I really don't know what to suggest if you can't buy a car charger (probably easier and cheaper to find than a proper charger). It really isn't a good idea to let the C500s battery go completely flat but it's a bit late for that now. Good luck. Edited April 12, 2005 by Confucious

If you install the USB driver that comes with the C500 CD when XP dectects a new device and prompts for a driver, then it WILL charge using the standard cable. Why? Don't know - I just know it works!!

Thanks <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Right - to make sure I wasn't lying to you I did this .... Took an new system that I happen to be just installing XP onto, plugged in the C500 via a standard USB to mini USB cable - no charging indication, but PC finds new USB device.... When it asked for driver, let it autofind and it found two matches - e:\wceusbsh.sys and e:\ms\actsync\main\core\drv\wceusbsh.sys (cd is e: drive) :D Let it use the one at e:\ and it installed and straightaway the charging indicator came on in display :D Attached file here - can't imagine it is copyrighted as every c500/SP3i/Typhoon must come with this anyway. :D Good Luck - let's hope it works for you. Guest Hoovie Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 re the dead battery, I guess if the phone is so dead not being detected as a USB device, then installing the driver or active sync won't make a difference. however what you could try is the old trick of sticking the battery on a radiator (or maybe run a hairdryer over it for a while) to warm it up - that used to give the old AAs a boost to run a radio or cassette player for a while longer when i was a nipper :D - maybe that will give just enough juice to get the phone recognised to kickstart a battery charge?
