Guest SquintyPete Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Hello Ladies and Gentleman I have an odd question and am hoping that maybe someone can answer it. I have an Audiovox SMT-5600 and am in the USA. Its kind of an embarrassing but here goes - I received a call the other day... it was a 911 operator calling my phone back because I had accidentally called them. The operator was very understanding when I stammered and mumbled about how I don’t know what happened so that was helpful. He even said it happens a lot and that I should make sure my keypad is locked....After hanging up with Him I became quite puzzled because as it turns out my phone was locked. So after playing around a bit I realized what happened. When the Phone is locked if you hold down the 9 key it brings up the emergency services number. I have never unlocked my phone accidentally when it was in my pocket but it seems that accidentally calling 911 is a much easier process... Does anyone know how to disable this "feature” Heck I just assumed when my phone was locked that it could NOT place a call but I was wrong turns out you can place a call... an embarrassing one to 911.... I have been searching the manual on-line. I really don't want to suffer through this embarrassment again. All help would be appreciated.
Guest d66 Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Dunno if you can disable it but its been a feature on all 3 non flip phones i've owned - so might be a required feature by the gov' so you can dial 911 really fast when you need to :D
Guest ajb3000 Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 It's a requirement of the GSM standard, so will be present on all phones and unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it.
Guest merguez Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 numbers you can dial when keypad is locked : 112 (emergencies in europe) 911 (emergencies in america) 999 (emergencies in england) 08 (emergencies in mexico)
Guest scm7rap Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 I think it's also the case that the emergency operator has to keep the line open for a set amount of time incase the person ringing is not able to talk. They also tell you to press 5 if you can't speak. That's why the number 5 has a dot on it - or on the spv c500 one above and below.
Guest Confucious Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Just tried it on my C500 - you have to hopld the 9 key down for some time before it comes up with the number (999 in my case) and then you have to press Talk to dial it, the other keys all cancel it so that explains why I've never ended up ialing them by mistake.

Guest scottishdave Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 (edited) numbers you can dial when keypad is locked : 112 (emergencies in europe) 911 (emergencies in america) 999 (emergencies in england) 08 (emergencies in mexico) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> 999 (emergencies in the United Kingdom) Why do foreigners think that it's only England that exists. Everybody seems to forget that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland exist. Sorry. Being Scottish it gets to me. Edited April 14, 2005 by scottishdave
