Has anyone had any problems with Sprite Backup

Hi

I recently used Sprite backup for the first time on my SPV and during the restore process it informed me that it would have to switch my activesync partnership to guest. Has anyone else had the same thing happen?

Since then I've not been able to get activesync to work even though I've tried every solution posted here and on the Sprite Forum.

The reason I ask this question is that when I sent this question to customer support.

Hello, I recently used your trial version of Sprite Backup for Smartphone. I'm using an Orange SPV which has been decertified, running Windows Smartphone 2002. On the PC side I'm running Windows 2000Pro, and Activesync 3.8.

During the back up process Sprite Backup informed me that it would have to switch Active Sync to "Guest" mode, which it did. It then backed up without problem, and all my software functions as before on the phone.

However now when I conect the phone to my PC via the cradle ActiveSync fails to start. I have tried a range of solutions suggested on the Modaco forum as found here http://www.modaco.com/Plugged_in_cradle_be..._here-t142.html however none of these solutions work, and I am now left with an unsyncable phone.

Do you have any solutions I could try? I'm obviously very reluctant to hard reset the phone as if Activesync still doesn't work I will have no way to restore my phone to it's current state.

I'm unable to attach the backup log file because of course I can't transfer files.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately I suspect the problem is an ActiveSync error. The backup process does not request the Activesync connection to be placed in Guest mode.

I suggest you remove your USB cable from the back of the PC and close ActiveSync. Also open the Task manager and ensure WCESMgr.exe and wcescomm.exe are not running. Then plug in the USB cable and connect your device and start ActiveSync by clicking Start> Programs> Activesync if it does not auto run.

If you continue to have prblems I suggest you uninstall Activesync and re-install it.

Best regards,

Sprite Software

Always nice to see a customer support person reading their e-mails well. I'm a little disappointed as it seems that Sprite has, in general, had good reviews on here.

Not quite the same problem I don't think, I did back up and resore quite well with Sprite, it seemed to manage everything but the Data Connection settings which I had to re-enter by hand. The problem is now that ActiveSync just doesn't know my phone is there when I plug it in.

Device Manager does because it lists it.

Today I installed Activesync onto a friend's PC which has never had it before, and tried my phone, but no joy. The error message said that ActiveSync had failed to recognise the device connected, and to unplug and try again if it was a telephone/pda.

I was wondering if there's anyway to reset Activesync on the telephone, to remove it's current settings. Perhaps then it will try and make a new connection.

This really annoys me, as it seemed that Sprite was the perfect solution and now instead I have a Titanic of a phone, and potentially no way to re-install anything if I have to hard reset.

Sprite's Tech Support are still mailing me slightly uselss solutions and asking me to mail them the backuplog file, which of course I can't do because it's on the phone, and I can't get it off.

So I've hard reset, then I used the French Orange Backup Restore program which came with their 1.6 ROM upgrade. It pretty much put it back how it was before, apart from the start menu fiddling I'd done with Jeyo Personaliser.

As for Sprite, I don't think I'll be buying it, not when I realise I have pretty much the same thing for free from Orange.

This is a dumb question. . but. . .what happens if you lose your phone? Or crack the screen? There isn't really a PC-interface for Sprite, at least not as far as I can tell. If you have to interface via the phone, and you lose the phone, aren't you a bit screwed? Like I said, it's a dumb question, because I'm obviously missing something.

Sprite does backup either to PC or storage card.

From the product description :

Backup to host PC

Backup directly to your host PC or a Network using the convenient PC Agent. You can backup when connected via ActiveSync or any form of wireless networking (Win XP and Win 2000 only).

Well assuming you've already done a back up to your PC you'll have the files in a directory on your PC. Then when you get your replacement phone, you just install Sprite onto it using their installer you got with the programme then follow the instructions to restore your back up onto your new phone, then spend days e-mailing them to sort out the glitches.
