M1000 ROM Update Issues

I'd like to try MMS messaging on my m1000.

I contacted Orange, who advised I install the latest ROM as I'm on an earlier version:

my settings:

Operator Version: 3.66.1.200

ROM version: 1.66.00.WWE

ROM date: 02/20/04

Radio version: 1.10.00

Protocol version: 1337.18

ExtROM version: 1.66.200

So on Orange advice, I downloaded the rom from their site and tried to run the update, all ok so far ...

The exe file extracted some files;

A nice message box came up on my pc monitor to ensure that I had:

1) backed up my phone

2) had my phone on full battery

3) had my phone in its cradle

so I continued to press the next button

The PC started doing its thing and nothing else happened for a long while, then I got an error message, "ERROR 101" or it may have been "ERROR 1001", "CONNECTION ERROR".

So I tried again, this time, noting what happened on my m1000 too.

I noted that the phone was in its cradle and that the icon in the corner told me all was well ..

The, pc did its thing, I pressed 'NEXT' to install the update ..

The phone then disconnected its connection from the PC and re-established its connection with the cradle, indicating that it had lost its connection with the PC etc .. then the error message appeared on my computer screen ..

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro ..

I've been on the phone to Orange, on and off, for the past week ... trying this and that but no joy with installing the rom or using MMS!!

The first time I called, I spoke to a 3rd Line Tech Support guy by the name of 'Robert' who advised I take the phone to an Orange shop, get them to try with my phone and one off of the shelf (BTW when I was going to get an m1000 originally, no Orange shop would get one in for me, unless I said I would purchase it!!)

Orange haven't been a lot of help so far, but the saga will continue ..

meantime, does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening and a solution?

ANY advice would be good...

Ta, Mr Platypus.
