Guest mjhirsch Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I have a strange problem. I am trying to change the order of the programs in my start menu, but can't seem to. I have used smartione and Pham's reg editor and check the order, which are set as I want them, but for some reason everything is in alphabetical order. Any suggestions on what could be causing this? I have installed a ton of different programs so it could be one of them, but they are mostly games and media type apps. Thanks.

If you try to arrange the order of programs other than the first 7 one, it completely messes up the start menu order.

Anyone know of a solution, other than resetting the whole thing?
Guest dchester Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Check the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu\Order Make sure there are no typos. There is a limit on how many shortcuts you can put there, but it's higher than 7 (I think it is 16). I currently have 9. I also have one blank line at the end.

Google g-start! it's free, and lets you easily change the first 16 to any order you want and make folders and you don't even have to have it as one of your 16! it's great!
Guest genaldar Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 I use abstract start. You can set the order for the entire start menu and even change the say it's laid out (I use 12 icons per page, my sister uses 11).
Guest geoffrey118 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 If you have abstract start....you definately have to check the WM5 layout!! Looks absolutely COOOOOOL!!

I use "Not Magneto" my sister uses "SE Large Icons". WM5 is ok, but I prefer having 12 icons (less depth equals easier to find everything).
