Guest Perfectionist Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 My 1Gb SD has less than 1Mb space left on it - just wondering if these card need a little space to "breathe" like Hard Disk do ?? Is Defragmenting or Formatting SD cards good or bad ??
Guest i_oWn_u Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Ive always had mine with just a little left has never hurt me, just some programs running a little slower. I went over the limit on my mpx220 in memory I have a 512mb and I went to around 600mb crashed my phone! Had to re-format it :x
Guest MitchellO Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I have only about 50mb free on my 1Gb sd card and have no problem. but if you think about it, if you only had a 64mb card, you'd probably only have a few meg free at best. Don't worry about filling your card, cram as much in as you can!
Guest Perfectionist Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I was wondering if maybe a small percentage of the card should be left empty for optimum performance like maybe 5% or something .... ?? No point having a fast JAM with a slooooow SD !!
Guest mavisdavis Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 i filled mine untill I had nothing left now it will only let use 750mb of it. gotta send it back this weekend to get replaced as I think its gone bad on me :D
Guest MitchellO Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I think it would be a good idea to leave some free space, as some progs you install on the SD card would create temp files and other things in their root directory (stored on the sd).
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I had an app called (I think) Spacemaker from PocketGear which claimed to defrag the SD but actually corrupted it. Ended up having to reformat it and reinstalling everything so be careful if you go down that route.
Guest MitchellO Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I have never thought about defraging my SD. Never found a reason to! but I will certainly heed your warning :D
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 There may well be no need to do it but you know what it's like when you see something that looks clever and has a free trial....
Guest MitchellO Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Yes, new software is always tempting. Particularly stuff that the average user wouldn't do!! (like defraging). Being in the Power User category, and am a sucker for things like that.
