Orange Dot Vs. Black dot?

Hey, when I was looking at these phones on ebay, somebody had asked one of the sellers if their box had a black dot or an orange dot on the label. I just assumed at the time that it was one of those crooked dealers who buys used/refurb phones and tries to pass them off as new on ebay, and therefor must know something about them.

...But, I was kind of curious. What's the point of that (the different color dots)? Why would someone want to know this, and how would they have found out the significance of the dot? I've wondered ever since I saw that.

Oh, and I imagine that it could only apply to Cingular phones

motorola/cingular recalled all the phones back near the end of '04 and stated that they would be upgraded with the newest firmware (and that they would have orange stickers on their boxes). im guessing everyone in retail stores got a notice about it and it made its way to common knowledge that way, as well as over the web - i think they released something to the general public about it as well.
