Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Posted here on DigiTimes... things are not all well in the Motorola / Windows Mobile camp... Motorola plans to cancel the launch of its MPx230 Microsoft Windows-based smartphone, manufactured by Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS), according to sources at Taiwan handset makers. The vendor also intends to discontinue orders of the MPx200 and MPx220 models with CMCS and the MPx with Compal Electronics, indicated the sources. CMCS and Compal declined to comment on the report. If the smartphone orders are canceled, it may confirm a January 21 article, which quoted the Chinese-language Commercial Times as saying that Taiwan handset makers will no longer land ODM orders for Microsoft smartphones from Motorola. Sources in the China handset market noted that the cancellation of the MPx is partly because the China government has banned unapproved devices using Wi-Fi from being sold in the country. Rather than take the Wi-Fi out of the device, Motorola instead decided to no bother selling the model in China, according to the sources. With the lukewarm response to the MPx220, the canned MPx100 and the poorly received MPx300 (aka MPx)... are things going pear-shaped for Windows Mobile's highest profile supporter? P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 And people were singing their praises not so long ago! I thought the MPx200 did fairly well. Why dont they just fix the mistakes they made in the past with later models instead of pulling out entirely? Dumb.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Unless they're just switching manufacturers!
Guest philgriffiths Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 They have even had a review of the MPX220 published in T3 Magazine this month. Granted it doesn't exactley give it a raptuous round of applause but it still scores four stars. Seems strange for them to give up on smartphone completey. Would hope its more likley they want to find a better (or cheaper ;) ) manufacturers, which hopefully means some great smartphones to come from the mighty motorola
Guest morpheus2702 Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 It doesn't make much business sense for Motorola to sell its stake in the Symbian consortium last year only to pull the plug on its smartphones with Windows now. My take is that it is their choice of manufacturing partners that they are re-evaluating.
Guest Pigo Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 Mpx230? anybody have some info? if it's a MPX220 but reduced measurements then it would deffinatly get my vote hehe Pigo
Guest morpheus2702 Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 All I can gather is that it was a MPx220 with EDGE support for the US market.
Guest Pigo Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 to bad.. Theres seems to be some talk of a MPX 2 .. one that should have been better then the (hopeless) MPX Pigo
Guest Tunney Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 I'm sure that Motorola will continue to develop Windows smartphones, just as they will continue to develop Symbian and Linux smartphones. The MPx220 and MPx releases really have been screwed up though. There's still no sight of either phone in the UK and, given all the negative comments about them, I really couldn't care less.
Guest dog Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 I hear Moto has taken the smartphone development back in-house, that's all.
Guest StarfireCT Posted April 18, 2005 Report Posted April 18, 2005 The MPx200 was a good phone. The MPx100 would have been too late (and under powered) to compete against HTC, IMHO... and the MPx220 was met with a luke warm response because it was only released through ONE carrier (stupid, if they want high unit numbers) and had to be recalled twice over... buggy ROM issues (call volume, of all things!) and camera issues? I'm shocked the 220 has done as well as it has! I'm hoping that Mot is just rethinking their process and/or OEM vendors for future phones... (I'm sporting a SMT5600, because of the 220 snafu of last year) JM2C!
Guest elhornet Posted April 19, 2005 Report Posted April 19, 2005 Check this too : http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1170 Motorola Scraps MPx Launch This phone could have been the best handset of the year, I'm gutted.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 19, 2005 Report Posted April 19, 2005 Trust me, it wasn't that great ;) P
