Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 A few months ago I posted a news item regarding the possibility we may see Skype released for the Smartphone platform at some point in the not to distant future. All had been quiet recently and I had heard no more, until I noticed an article on mobilemag.com At the Voice On the Net (VON) conference in Toronto, Skype Technologies co-founder and CEO Niklas Zennstrom reported that a mobile version of Skype will be available this year. Skype is a free global telephony application that allows for VoIP communications, it currently runs on Mac OSX, Windows and Pocket PC, Skype plans to release a version for Embedded Linux, Symbian or Windows Mobile devices later this year. “We will encourage hardware manufacturers to deploy Skype on their devices.” said Zennstrom. SkypeMobile for mobile devices (our unofficial name for the new Skype) will be targeted to hardware manufacturers for integration into new dual-mode (GPRS + WiFi) mobile devices once made available to carriers. It is very possible we will see a Smartphone with wifi before the end of the year, if we don't Voice over IP (viop) applications such as Skype could be implemented over 3G when we finally see the release of a 3G smartphone. Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 That is the worst screenshot Photoshop ever ;) P
Guest tendomentis Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 What's the point unless they can make it usable on a GPRS network? Everybody loves 3G, but unlimited GPRS is actually affordable and although it might not be broadband, GPRS is still fast enough to support GSM voice compression for VOIP.
Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 i think when 3g data kicks off it will be MUCH cheaper than gprs
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 Unlimited GPRS is affordable? Not in the UK it isn't ;) P
Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 well there is the wap on o2 p&g which i think is still free?
Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 lol no, but i didnt bring it up ;) although infact voip can operate over gprs in theory. however it would require maximum bandwidth. Since calls and other users reduce the ammount of bandwidth available in practice you cant get good enough transfer rates over gprs... bit of pointless dribble!
Guest www.msmobiles.com Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 The image of smartphone with skype in it is not real - it is doctored picture made out of Pocket PC version of Skype...
Guest PayableOnDeath Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 lol why do people bother in faking stuff like this :D if your goin to make a fake pic aleast make sure everything is level unlike that dropdown box on the pic lol ;)
Guest squall Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 we know its fake, but it does illustrate a point.
Guest pierre Posted April 22, 2005 Report Posted April 22, 2005 It makes sense not only for when *g devices will be there, but also for WIFI' ones. How does Skype work, is there any good link?
