Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 'gears' over at coolsmartphone.com picked up on this application from BBPSOFT. There’s quite a number of GPS based applications on the market for use with the smartphone. Most are intended for road navigation, such as Tomtom and copilot. There is also an application called outdoor navigator which is designed as a navigation aid to those who enjoy camping and hill walking. Unfortunately this is not available outside the us. The new application, named Smarthiker, offers some basic features which will come in very useful for navigating off road, such as lat/long, grid ref and speed of travel. SmartHiker Smarthiker is a Global Positioning System (GPS) software application for the Microsoft Smartphone especially for walkers, hikers and mountineers. It shows the following information using a bluetooth GPS unit: * Current Lat / Long Current * OSGB Grid reference (UK only) * Current Speed * Current Direction of Travel * Average Speed This is currently in beta release and tested on Orange c500 windows mobile 2003 SE using a TomTom Bluetooth GPS unit but should work fine with magalen, garmin gps units also and probably all of the available smartphones running windows mobile. As mentioned above this application is in beta, and as such is still in development. If you like the application you should consider donating to the author. More info < HERE >
Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 paul just pointed out this app is in the modaco downloads section already. see http://www.modaco.com/index.php?dlcategory=20
Guest Animefan Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 Which Smartphone is it intended for? And what do I need to use it?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 You need to be in the UK as it gives the grid numbers of the Ordenance Survey maps, it works on the C500 with the TomTom BT unit that I have tested ;) This has been in the modaco download section for about a week now after and can be discussed HERE
Guest i_oWn_u Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 (edited) you have to be in the UK or else it won't work??? Edited April 20, 2005 by i_oWn_u
Guest Animefan Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 okay I got none of the above.. no C500, no GPS and im in Denmark
Guest squall Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 c500 - see http://www.bbpsoftware.co.uk/Default.aspx?tabid=89
Guest babybob Posted April 20, 2005 Report Posted April 20, 2005 only works in the uk..... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi everyone Due to a small bug, which Im working on fixing, it will currently only work for a uk lat/long. Im planning on developing the product to support as many world grid systems as possible as well as extra features like total distance, km/miles option, weather, sunrise/sunset times. Ive tested it using a c500 and tomtom GPS but theres no reason it wont work with other combinations. Let me know if you have any ideas Thanks Brian Norman BBP Software
Guest 6thElement Posted April 21, 2005 Report Posted April 21, 2005 (edited) I've tried using this with my Fortuna clipon bluetooth GPS and C500 but can't get it to connect. Guest NX5 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Just the software I was after..Now if I could just get it to work! ;) Im using an E200 with a Globalsat BT-308 and I cant get the gps to start, I have tried Com7 on all baud rates (should be 38400) but as soon as the status shows gps started it stops again and if I press start again the status shows starting and stays that way, I have to reboot the phone. I have tried all Com ports but none of them work, I get gps started on Com 1, 8 & 9 but no gps data is displayed. What am I doing wrong? I have tried reonding but I dont think thats the issue, the gps unit worked fine with mapopolis and works pefectly with my pocketpc!!!!

I am putting together a version of smarthiker with more detailed error handling so that I can try and help people like yourself to get their gps devices working with SmartHiker. I will post to this thread when Its available. Brian Norman BBP Software

I am going out to test this afternoon, for me this is the killer app as Im a member of a search and rescue team it will be invaluable.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 I compared this to a Garmen unit in the New Forest and while both units gave different results it was not greatly different to worry about as such. I did get trouble initially with an error stating I was too far south  and the only way to fix this was to reboot the phone and then it worked without a problem.

Good to know it's comparable to a garmin. I've only tested it localy but it seems spot on with my leadtek gps unit.
Guest dolezelk Posted April 29, 2005 Report Posted April 29, 2005 The main problem with this software is that it does not work with MPX220. It simply does not recognize com6: , where BT GPS is connected. It's detection of registry settings in comm/active is far from perfect  Fortunatelly other software like Mapopolis is working fine with com6:
