CellTrack Users - how about NOT using "Home" eh?

I notice there are now a load of us on here that are using CellTracker, and logging it in our signature.

Can I therefore, respectfully as possible, request that you stop calling your local cell "Home", as it means not a lot or jot to the rest of us, provided of course your intention is to show the world, where you have been.

Home might be useful to 'you' - but with at least four different 'homes' on this site now, that's a lot of places with that strange name.

;-)

i had the same thoughts today as i was driving about

calling your 'home' cell home is a bit silly, calling it "my estate" or "my village" (replacing my estate for name of estate etc) makes a bit more sense

shad if your ever in heaton thats my doing ;)

anyways this could become a problem as theres always one idiot who spoils it for everone else and will name the cells silly names / selfish names.

lets hope orange find it in there heart to give us there list of cells!

It's actually designed to be that way though.

When you set a cell name it appears on your phone and your sig as that, but if you assign that cell to a personal group of cells (like I have with my commonly "visited" cells) the Group name is what appears in your sig.

So my sig saying "Home" doesn't mean that I've called a Cell "Home", it just means that the cell I'm in is assigned to my personal group of cells, collectively called "Home"

Same here. I have assigned 'Home', 'Work' and a couple of family members as personal groups. I still haven't been in a cell that anybody has pre-named yet ;) I hope everybody is naming the cells they pass through!

Your sig shows your "friendly" names (if set). People are not setting cells as "home" in the db

i have seen some people with 'Home' in the actual database... (not anyone round here) they probably dont understand the use of the group function.

just messes it up for others..

To ALL who posted...

Think yourselves lucky...

I still haven't worked out how you name a GROUP of cells...

Someone help me?

But even then, if you named the Group to a relevant name, such as (in my case) Dunston, instead of just home, wouldn't this work and be better, and make my point still totally valid?

Mmmm - I'm lost now...

I've just thought of something else too...

The NETWORK...

I had a new cell today pop up at home on CellTracker, and was curious as to why...

'Til I remembered I went ahead and got my 6230i I talked about on here, and placed the O2 SIM from my C500 into it, and have the newly recevied VODAFONE SIM, in the C500.

Hence the new cell...

So maybe as users we should be saying what NET we are on too, when we name the cells.

It won't matter as much where mast sharing applies, but in my case, it is worth noting that if you ever drive through Gateshead, most of you won't even get the names I have entered come up...

Because my original cells were with an O2 SIM, not Orange, and this new one is with a VODAFONE SIM...

Just another thing for us to discuss maybe?

Yep, thats how it should be done.

Different networks can use the same Cell ID and LAC numbers therefore each cell is usually known by its CGI. CGI (Cell Global Identification)=MCC (Mobile Country Code) + MNC (Mobile network Code) + LAC (Location Area Code) + CID (Cell Identification).

That way each cell has it's own identity ;)

You can add cells to a group on the Celltrack webpage (Account tab, then click on Cell Groups DB on the left) or in recent betas of the Celltrack client you can select Menu and then Edit Cell Group.

Does than mean that the same Cell ID can potentially be used in 2 different places, on 2 different networks? If so, Celltrack is currently very broken and will need another field in the DB.

Naming the network in the DB as shadamehr has done won't help, as the database still only stores one entry per Cell ID/LAC (which is why I now apparently live on Junction 14 of the M1, after someone modified my entry).

If different networks don't use them in different places, it doesn't really matter if they are labelled by network or not.

I'm right next to the x-scape, so not really that close to J14 or Newport Pagnell! That cell must cover a wide area.

I may be totally missing the point as I'm very new to this but I'm not sure I see the point of the friendly name then if you can not "personalise" it for your own use. Maybe the information displayed needs to be updated to include both Location Name + Friendly name??? If that is possible.

Yes, the networks can use any cell ID they want as these are used internally i.e all networks could have a cell ID 2000. It's the MCC+MNC that indicates which network it belongs to ;)

*cry* Now the cell has American English spelling ;)

I think there needs to be some level of moderation on submitted cell names, or a pre-populated DB.

From what Martin has said, the current database could well be pretty pointless anyway, so I think I'll give it a miss and come back when it's been further developed. It will probably be more useful to me when the cell switching events have been implemented anyway.

It does say on the cell track website to use public names, not names like "Home."
