Hey Guys

Ive searched this and other forums for a solution but cant find an answer. Ive phoned Orange and they dont know so its up to you guys!

Ive had an m2000 since January and everything was great. I could surf the web, stream music from my hard disk and listen to internet radio with wifi, until last week. For some reason all internet access has stopped (through wifi) although i can still browse my network and stream music from my pc's hard disk.

I have no idea why this happened. After phoning Orange they suggested upgradio the radio and doing a hard reset, which Ive done and still the same result.

Any help will be superb because im totally stumped as are orange

I dont think so as it worked on this router before and i havent changed the settings of the firewall. I have a feeling it is a router problem tho and maybe DNS settings but i dont understand them or what or how to change them.

Im so confused

How does the phone get on to the net normally? Think of it as a chain e.g.

phone -> wifi -> access point -> router -> internet

Which is most likely what you have. Now, you can get on your local network OK, so the phone/wifi/access point is fine. There is one small exception though; the phone needs to have the routers IP address set as it's default route (or gateway as it's sometimes called). You can check the current settings using vxIPConfig. If this was wrong, you'd see the problem you have just now.

If that's the case, the phone isn't getting it's IP address correctly from the router using DHCP.

You mention DNS; we'd need to know the exact details of what happens when you try to get on the net, what error messages you get etc.

Wow, thanks for replying. Ok i really am clueless about this, but I think I understand what youre saying and that sounds about right. How could I make the router give the right ip and how could i find the correct gateway address & enter it in the m2000?

The settings that vxUtil returned are:

ne2000 compatable ethernet drive

ipadd: 192.168.1.3

subnet: 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 0.0.0.0

wireless ethernet drive

ip add: 192.168.1.3

subnet: 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 192.168.1.1

primary dns: 192.168.1.1

dhcp server: 192.168.1.1

I have since turned off all encryption and firewalls just incase it was that.

Finally the error message that appears when I try and browse I web page is:

It first looks for ages then loads an old version of that page probably from the history

when i press refresh it says:

The web page you are looking for can not be found.

ive tried google and bbc.

Thank you for your help and I hope this has helped you.

Ok, it's not the default gateway, for the wireless card it looks to be set as the same as the DNS server. That's quite common, though not always the case.

What you want to do now is get the same settings from a Windows box that does work. Start/Run/"cmd.exe" then type in "ipconfig -a" (both without the quotes).

Compare the primary DNS setting on the PC to the one on the phone. Do the same for the gateway, that should also be the same.

Also, you could try going to an IP address directly e.g. http://66.102.9.104 (which is www.google.co.uk). It that works, DNS is broke, if it doesn't your routing is broke.

Ok thanks again, ive just got back from work. All the address match up so i tried to enter the the ip address you gave me for google and it came back saying the same thing:

The page you are looking for can not be found

Does this mean my routing is broken? Can I fix this at all? Sorry for being a pain

Yup it's broke. I take it that the rest of the computers are working fine? Very unusual for it to be just the one device. What are you using for a router? Does it have some kind of firewall that maybe has a filter set on IP address, or the MAC address of the network card.

Next suggestion is to verify the next step in the chain. Download vxUtils and use the ping option to try and hit the router's IP address. Ping is a "hello" that checks the machines can talk. If that works, try to ping the IP address of Google that I gave you earlier.

If that works, which thinking about it has given me an idea, it may be some sort of web proxy problem. Perhaps you accidentally enabled the proxy on the phone? Go to Settings/Connections then click on the "connections" icon. Then check the settings in "set up my proxy server". You probably want it turned off, but you could check you your web browser is set up to make sure.

Youve only gone and done it!! Thank you so much!!! What a genius and superstar. Youre like a super hero for PDA's now you need a cool super hero name!

Somehow my 3com router had blocked the ip address 192.168.1.3. I have no idea how, I just went through all the settings to see if anything you had told me popped up.

Thanks again, I hope I can return the favour sometime

Ashley
