Guest Perfectionist Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 SWEET ;) http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/storage/0...39191254,00.htm
Guest £50 Scent Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 "The prototype of the Micro-electrical-mechanical system (MEMS) can hold the equivalent of 25 DVDs on an area the size of a postage stamp" but "We're some way from making it available to the consumer," IBM added. "We've no plans to bring it to market for a couple of years." ;) not on jam.
Guest Perfectionist Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 Dude ! I dont mean on the JAM you have right now..... future JAM's ;)
Guest £50 Scent Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 yeh, tru that. but, i doubt there will be generations of jam, they will probably use other obscure words to make the new products seem newer and more innovative. makes the 1gb sd i ordered seem insignificant tho.
Guest mike-oh Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 Yes i have heard of this but cant remember where strangely :S I even remember seeing pictures of it, my first thoughts were how fragile it would be. The describe how it works think of braille but in reverse: There's a tiny (and boy do i mean tiny) little needle on an arm which runs over a series of pits which it can detect (when reading) and create (when writing). However each needle can only cover a very small amount of space (therefore information), so 1000s of the little things are arranged in a matrix to store the masses of data. It struck me that with all those tiny moving parts that something could quite easily break/jam up. That could be an explanation as to why it won't be commercially available for another two years, they're finding ways to rectify it!
Guest Perfectionist Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 (edited) Has anybody got thoughts on these guys .... http://www.physorg.com/news785.html http://colossalstorage.net/ At first I thought they might be a dodgy hoax like.... http://atomchip.com/index.html but it appears Colassal Storage "might" actually become a reality ;) Edited April 24, 2005 by Perfectionist
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 Its way over my head but those sites read like spoofs - like the science project reported in the news this week. String together a lot of pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo and hope everyone reading switches off normal critical faculties and joins in with the hype  As I said though, I can't really judge
Guest mike-oh Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 (edited) In theory, yes UV light should allow you to store more information (i don't know what all this talk of holograms and cak is about). UV is higher freguency and shorter wavelength than red light which is currently used in CDs and DVDs world over. As it is shorter wavelength more bits of information can be stored per unit area of the disk as the beam can be more narrowly focused. Some diagram showing that appears on one of those sloppy looking sites linked to above. Infact sony and toshiba will soon be releasing blu-ray (www.blu-ray.com) which uses a blue/violet laser to achieve higher capacities. It is anticipated that single-layer discs will get upto 27Gb with dual-layer upto 54Gb. Therefore using an ultra violet laser, as suggested, should bump up storage size even more! However i'm guessing UV lasers are prohibitively expensive. Maybe one day we'll see devices using gamma rays and our PCs will weigh half a ton due to the lead lining, but at least we'll have 52 Exobytes of storage! Edited April 24, 2005 by mike-oh
Guest MitchellO Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 That Atom Chip site is a load of cr4p. I mean look at one of their laptops with this "100GB/256GB AtomChip Non-Volatile RAM and Storage". Specifications "SG111": 100GB/256GB AtomChip Non-Volatile RAM and Storage / 4.0GHz AtomChip CPU / 8.9" 16:9 wide view color TOSHIBA LTPS TFT LCD with (32-bit) 1024 x 600 (XGA-W ) high resolution display. Touch Panel overlaid for full screen touch control. Landscape and Portrait dual mode /MULTIPLE EMBEDDED WIRELESS FUNCTIONS (WiFi, Bluetoth, GPRS, GPS) / SIM card slot / IEEE1394 x 2 /USB2.0 x 2 / TV-out /VGA-out / LAN (RJ45) / Modem(RJ11) / Stereo Earphone /, (AC 97) Speakers x 2, Microphone, 80 / 86-key standard keyboard (Multiple Language support) / PCMCIA / Rechargeable Li-Ion battery / Windows XP-Professional / Voice Command / AC Adapter / Dimensions: 235 x 155 x 31 (mm) / Weight around 1200g (when fully equipped). 1.2kg with WiFi/BT/GPRS/GPS??? I doubt it. 4Ghz processor??

Guest iwod Posted April 24, 2005 Report Posted April 24, 2005 That is at least another 5 - 10 years away.......... Did you know AMD K9 was supposed to be out in 1999?

Guest MitchellO Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 We already knew that MitchellO ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry?!?! just expressing an opinion.
Guest FloatingFatMan Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Is there any reason why "they" didn't go for the blue wavelength instead of the red...... from the beginning ?????? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> For the same reason ALL tech is released in dribs & drabs, slowly getting better. It's a combination of advances in tech, and money. Mostly money. They know damn well people will buy the best that's out there, so they release something better every 6 months or so and make you buy it all over again. It's why PC tech tends to have a 6 month lifecycle... Never noticed that's roughly the periodicy of new CPU's & video cards?
Guest mike-oh Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Sorry?!?! just expressing an opinion. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No offense intended mate! it's just that in the original post perfectionist already said it was cack! ;) And they didn't use blue lasers because they're more expensive as floatingfatman said. They're probably only just becoming economical to produce now. So long as all blu-ray devices come with a silver logo backlit with a blue LED i'll be happy! 8)
Guest iwod Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Is there any reason why "they" didn't go for the blue wavelength instead of the red...... from the beginning ?????? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> how else are they going to get more money from you? By releasing thing one by one they could squeeze out more from you. ( Just my consiprcy theory ;) )
Guest Perfectionist Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Not really a conspiracy theory - its just textbook capitalism theory ;)
