Guest xerxes Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Guys, My Jam seems to hard reset itself every time I change the SIM card. This is a problem as I have to change between 2 different SIMs pretty often. Is this normal? I thought the back up battery would keep it powered if the battery is removed for 30 seconds. Xerxes
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 That can't be normal. Are you sure the backup battery is fully charged ? Should last 30 minutes at least - certainly not 30 seconds. Sounds like a hardware fault to me.
Guest xerxes Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 Has anyone else had a hard reset when they pull out the SIM? I am wondering whether removing the SIM (as opposed to the battery) triggers a hard reset for some reason. It would be pretty stupid I know but you never can tell.
Guest bolasz Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 I've changed the sim card a few times, no hardreset...
Guest Disco Stu Posted April 26, 2005 Report Posted April 26, 2005 Actually, same here. Used to swap SIM between Jam & C500 with no problems.
Guest MitchellO Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 This has happened to me ONCE. I swap often as well because I have a SIM card I use just for GPRS. Not sure why though. Has worked every other time since, and many times before. Just make sure you. 1. Turn device off 2. take off battery cover 3. remove battery 4. swap sim card 5. replace battery and cover 6. press power button, but nothing else The backlight is normally off when it reboots, so make sure you wait. I think the time i did it i thought it was dead or something, so after pressing the power button, i pushed the soft reset button. I think that is what caused my Hard Reset
Guest rizzles Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 This may sound stupid but how do you actualy turn it off? All i seem to be able to do is reset it!
Guest MitchellO Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 What do you mean turn it off? Just push the power button.
Guest yarod_g14 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 (edited) When you press the power button all you are doing is putting the device in standby mode. It is not off, only the screen is disabled temporarily. A call or other usage will turn the screen back on. I do not believe that your device should be doing this (instant reset). Might be a good idea to try and send it back. I must admit, Im scared to take the battery out of mine now. MitchelO, I am also under the impression all PPC's switch on by them selves as well when you insert the battery and close the back-plate. This kind of makes your "easy to follow" instructions a bit flawed. This is because the PPC device's uses a different storage method to Smartphones namely SD RAM instead of Flash memory. Within a smartphone the device uses non powered Flash memory for storage, think IPSM for older models and the actual "STORAGE" section on the newer WM2003 jobbies(same as SD cards etc). This means it can store data whilst it is in effect "off" i.e. no power going through the device at that present time. PPC's are a bit different, they do have a "Flash" storage section, but this is limited to the ROM backup and a very small user accesible section (on XDA variants this is useable -about 8 megs- on Magician its locked until you "unblock the extended ROM") The main memory is actually SD Random access Memory, this requires power for it to keep data stored. This is why you loose personal data but not ROM when you run out of power for such a long time that the Battery kepping the SD RAM static also dies....Did someone mention this takes 30 mins? Guest MitchellO Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Don't be. I took the battery out 4 times today. Each time to swap the sim.
Guest pauld Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 The same thing happens to me everytime I take try to swap the sim. Hard reset. I can't remember the last time I did it now as I'm reluctant to take the battery out. My phone is a imate jam on Vodafone if it makes a difference.
Guest xerxes Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I'm on Vodafone too but I cannot believe that can be what's causing the hard resets. I read somewhere that the Jam has a tendency to reset "unless you remove the battery in exactly the right way" but I cannot remember where I saw the article. Can anyone comment on what is exactly the right way?
Guest MitchellO Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I just flip it out and slid it in. Nothing fancy.
Guest bertie_uk Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 Mine is doing this too, I have a vodafone and an orange sim and the jam hard-reset's every time I take the battery out to swap sim cards. I have my contacts, etc saved in Permanent Save, but have to re-install all my apps. every time. Anyone found a cure? Or could it be a hardware fault with my backup battery (shows 100%) Bertie
Guest Disco Stu Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 Further to the above, I have read that the tiny plastic retaining lug (or whatever it's called :?: ) that goes over the battery is over-sensitive and this causes a hard reset if disturbed in a rough manner. You know what I mean.... :)
Guest bertie_uk Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 The little red rubber thing? I have tried moving that then taking the battery out, taking the battery out not touching it, doesn't seem to have any effect. Is really bugging me now, going back at this rate :) Bertie
Guest erwinsie Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 (edited) add: for u who get the hard reset, dont worry about trying many2 methods of how to change simcard without have hard reset. if u get hard reset, then its hardware problem. in normal Mini, all u have to do is just take the battery n put it back. nothin special. hi all.. i have the same problem tooo!!! and some other ppl from other forums aswell.. so i think this is really manufacturer defect. the bad is, i sent my mini to 02 service center (im in australia) then after 1 week, it came back but still have the same problem. i dont know why they didnt test it before send back to me, but now im made a complaint directly to O2 asia. i advise u guys to send it back quickly to your country service center. Guest MitchellO Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 I sent my Mini back to get fixed (had a dead pixel when I got it) and when I got it back I loaded all my progs, and then the first time I went to switch sims it did the hard reset. Hasn't since though. Only the once out of the two I had. I love my Mini!!!
