A friend put me on to Airsoft after talk about paintball, but as a newbie to it I'm wondering what I need to kit myself out.

I've trawled the retailers sites (like www.wolfarmouries.co.uk) but it looks like I need to be spending +\- £200 for a reasonable gun.

Anyone have any tips for a newbie?

Cheap places to get guns - Anyone imported them from HK? does it work out any cheaper - they seem to be about half the UK price

Motor ratings - Do they have a big effect on the performance (range/accuracy/power) of the gun

Any good venues, especially in the South East of England. Indoor sites would be fave

ive never been into it full on but i did own a couple of smaller guns awhile ago. a spring loaded Uzi, a spring loaded Berreta and two Gas powered pistols (one with a lasersight). i was always put off by the price of the larger weapons.

perhaps you should start small and work your way up.

for pistols i paid about £40 for the spring powered ones and £90 for my biggest gas powered one.

or jusy go all out on one of these bad boys

yeah ive managed to draw blood with a Gas powered pistol, and that was with plastic BB's. that was on bare skin though, i wouldn't advise shooting yourself without any protective gear on. it really hurts...

you can buy them legally yes but i wouldn't advise taking them out in public as most look authentic (interestingly, in the US all replica guns have to have Orange barrel tips) and you dont want an armed response team called out.

there plenty of info on the web about them (google is you friend)

I think I might go for a second-hand one to start me off

I'm not very accurate, more of a "blatter" than a "sniper", so I really was after something with a large magazine and full-auto!

The M60s are too expensive (£700!). Nice though. No, no, no! Put the credit card down and step away from the keyboard!

I was hoping for some tips on what makes a good beginners gun, but in case anyone else stumbles across this there's a good second-hand section on www.arniesairsoft.co.uk

When I started I bought an M4A1 from Den Trinity in 2002 which I still have and use regularly (twice a month). I use Den Trinity and UNCompany. Both are reasonable but the shipping to the States can be costly but in most cases, worth it.

If this is just a once and a while hobby, don't drop a lot of cash but if you get hooked and can find a good group of people to play with, well you'll see.

These are the guys I play with and we travel the Eastern and Mid West states to play. We enjoy the game very much.

TAC- Tactical Airsoft of Cleveland

We're located in Ohio with many other teams across the states to play with and against.

Good luck on your decision.
