Opening ZIP email attachments?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to find an answer to this but couldn't find anything (maybe used wrong keywords), so please don't kill me if it has been answered a dozen of times already.

Is it possible to open or save a ZIPped archive received as an e-mail attachment? I couldn't do this on my C500. When I receive an email with other types of attachments (for example, a JPEG picture) when I click the attachment, it will open in the multimedia viewer - no problem.

But when I click on a ZIP attachment, it will just open the file manager, nothing more. I thought, OK, I'll try to save the attachment somewhere and open it there - but - I didn't find any way to save an attachment. Is there a way to do this? Or if not, where can I find the (already downloaded) attachments of the email messages? :?:

Thanks for any clues in advance.

Rado

PS: Also, my bank has just decided that they will use RAR archives instead of ZIP archives for the bank account statements they're sending to me. Is there a tool to extract a RAR archive for smartphones?

I think you have to associate the ZIP file to another program, for example Smart Explorer.

Smart Explorer can unzip files. ;)

Is this really needed? The built-in File Manager can open and extract ZIP files without a problem when I browse to them, even the encrypted ones. So I don't know why it doesn't do this when I click a ZIP files attached to an e-mail message. ;) Is it working for anyone else?

yes it is working...

try to download the mail again... maybe the attached file is corrupted the time you downloaded it...

I guess the file should be OK, as other attachments are OK. I have tried it again with a small (700bytes) test zip file, and it does the same thing, that is, when I click the attachment, the File Manager just opens in the same view as it was used last time - if I do that after turning on the phone, it will show a tree view of the smartphone root, otherwise it will be in the last directory I visited when working with it.

Anyone has got any ideas on what might be broken and how to fix this?

Thanks,

Rado

UPDATE:

After trying again to open it, I could find the attached ZIP filed in the \Storage\Application Data\Volatile, and the file was also deleted from Volatile when I closed the email message.

So my assumption is that everything is working fine, even the File Manager is correctly associated with ZIP file, but for some reason it will not open the ZIP file directly, it will just open itself with the recent directory open. Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or is it directly opening the ZIP file for you BrAGoL?
