Guest Eddy P Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 (edited) I became the proud owner of an SPV c500 on sunday, had all the plans for it, to get the GPS and have loads of joy with it, well it got stolen today, thank you Mr. theiving w*****. Now ive reported it to orange, so the phone has been barred and so has the sim card. Unfortunately when the lady in the shop offered me orange care i said, no its ok, ive never had a phone stolen or lost or broken before, if only i had taken it out ;) What id like to make sure is as a result of the blocking does the scum bag now have a very expensive paper weight, or can he do something to use the phone again? Im hoping its useless, and so he wont gain from my loss, can anyone confirm this? Its a shame we cant track our phones so that i can find it and teach the person that took it, not to take other peoples possesions ;) Thanks Eddy Edited April 27, 2005 by squall
Guest squall Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 the phone cant be used in hte uk gain, and has next to no value. You can buy orange care after everything goes wrong! costs about £75 + £5 a month for remaining contreact
Guest Eddy P Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 thanks squel, the woman at orange said £100 for that phone and £5 there after for 12 months. Im glad the phone cant be used in the UK again, with any luck someone round uni might find it in a bush and hand it in to UNI security, if they do and i notify orange does anybody know what they do about it? Thanks
Guest squall Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 if you tell them you have it back, and can prove your the owner, not the thief they can unlock it again ;)
Guest Eddy P Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 ah good stuff, i assume the IMEI number just gets blocked from everything then. But i know with older nokias the imei number could be changed, have they improved this with smart phones so that it isnt possible to cahnge? i hope so, it definately was a weakness in the system, if the phone gets blocked theres no point stealing them so with any luck all mobiles thefts will stop one day, tho im probably dreaming lol.
Guest pisquee Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Although I am sure it is possible to do with smartphones, and any other cell phone, it is highly illegal to even own the equipment/software to do this, let alone actualy do it, carrying heavy fine and jail! (In the UK anyways, not sure about the Euro and Worldwide legislation)
Guest Alex_le_brit Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 (edited) I guess the only downside is that with something as desirable as a latest model smartphone, and e-bay the thief could easily sell it to someone overseas, and pay next to nothing for shipping. Just a thought though, if we all had celltrack on our phones we could see roughly were they were after they were stolen. Pity there's not a way to lock a phone from making calls but leaving this still active. Edited April 27, 2005 by Alex_le_brit
Guest Eddy P Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 how does celltrack work then? im currently debating wether its worth paying £75 or £100 to get another spv c500, or do i stick with my 6600 for 12 months till i can have another upgrade.
Guest mupwangle Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 >>£100 for that phone and £5 there after for 12 months. You could always buy a pay as you go one for around £140 with no extra £5 monthly charges.

Erm...you mean like the device lock? ;) If device lock is on, you can only receive incoming calls and cant do anything else with the phone...even if you switch it off and back on ;)

That way Celltrack would still work, couldn't be switched off if you'd placed it in the right portion of your start menu, and you could track your phone, at least until the battery ran out.
Guest PayableOnDeath Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 yeh great idea ring up orange n tell them the person that nicked your phone is in cell id xxx-xxxxx ask them where that covers then go around will all your mates finding the guy that nicked it lol then beat them up n tell them never to nick your phone again ;) What great use for Cell-Track ;)
Guest Alex_le_brit Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Even better you could ring them up and tell them you know where they live, now that would spook me if I was a phone thief.
Guest Eddy P Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 oh well this gets better and better, orange made a slight cock up and didnt barr the phone when i asked them to. As a result ive had people very angry with me today, due to abusive calls and txts they received last night. And so i phoen orange to complain, they apologise and dont offer to do anything apart from refund the calls that are made. I dont see why they cant look at which area the phone was last used in, tell me, i can tehn match that with uni records, find out who it is, conact the police and get this situation resolved, surely it wouldnt take them long to do.
Guest James Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 no it would not take them long....... you can track your own phone on Orange World in about 5 seconds ;) and its not bad!
Guest mcwarre Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 you can track your own phone on Orange World in about 5 seconds ;) and its not bad! James, Do you have a link???
Guest James Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Access it on your phone:- Access Orange World then:- Tools/Maps/Where Am I?
Guest mirpy1 Posted April 28, 2005 Report Posted April 28, 2005 Access it on your phone:- Access Orange World then:- Tools/Maps/Where Am I? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> that seems pretty pointless to me, if your phone gets nicked how can you track it on orange world? and using orange world on another phone will only track the phone that is in your hand hence "where am i". must be just a gimmick or you could use it on a night out when you stagger home mopped and cant find your street for beer ;)
Guest PayableOnDeath Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 no it would not take them long....... you can track your own phone on Orange World in about 5 seconds ;) and its not bad! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> its not really much good as it said I was in the centre of barnsley when infact I was our side of marked out area where is said I was lol All that just for 25p as well
