I'm trying to use my C500 to allow my Windows Pocket PC to connect to the internet using GPRS. I've got the PDA talking to the phone just fine with Bluetooth, but I'm not sure what settings I need to put into the dial-up networking bit to get an internet connection via GPRS.

I know there used to be a page on Orange's website that walked you through all teh settings for this kind of thing, and connecting laptops too, but it seems to have gone now.

Can anyone help?

That's as far as I've got. The phone starts to connect, the pda then asks for the username and password which I leave blank. It then fails.

I'm wondering if I need to be putting anything in the username \ password?

I am looking to achive the exact some thing here. I have a IPAQ that I would like to connect to the net by using the GPRS in my C500. I have followed the instructions above but im prompted with a user/pass/domain question as soon as it appears to be connected. IM not sure what these settings could possibly be.

Can someone please confirm that this is possible and also give us any tips and tricks to make it work. Cheers.

I know the answer to this now, will post it when i'm on my desktop Pc. Alternatively Orange CS on 150 were superb at talking me through it.

I can't remember the whole thing you need to do, but Orange tech support were excellent at talking me through all the steps to get the C500 working with a Pocket PC. It turns out the main thing stopping it working is that you need to pass an initilisation string to the phone while dialling.

Firstly the number your dial-up connection needs to dial is *99#

The username needs to be user, the password is then either user, password or orange (can't remember which).

In the advanced settings you ned to enter the following in the "Extra dial-string modem commands" box:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet"

And that should be it!

Let us know how you get on.

Username = user

Password = pass

It works (sort of) for me though without the extra string (just dialling *99#).

When I say sort of, I mean I have to go through a crazy procedure to get it to work. First I have to reboot the phone, then connect first to GPRS using explorer (say, orange home), then disconnect and connect using the PocketPC. Only then does it seem to get a proper connection.

Then if I get a call during the GPRS connection, I can't reconnect without re-booting and going through the whole procedure again!!!

Maybe the extra sting will solve that problem. I'll let you know.

No, no difference.

In fact when the phone decides that it won't let me connect anymore it's not just the PPC that can't connect. I also can't reconnect to GPRS using the phones internet explorer (i.e. Orange World).

Anyone else have this problem with ropey GPRS? :?:

Just for the record I have this working now. I did have to reboot the phone but its a bit too early to know just yet if Im going to have to do this everytime.

I did NOT use the extra string info as suggested in an earlier post. The phone number and user/pass where enough to get it all going. I suppose the next step is to make this as convenient as possible so that its easy to dial up on the train or wherever..

Cheers all for contributing. I hope this will help someone else out when they are looking for this info.

You should be able to simply tap on the two arrows located at the top of the PPC screen. Then chose the *99# highlighted in blue. You shouldn't actually have to use a username or password.

I must say this thread is worrying. I have been trying to use my new Ipaq to connect using c500. Admittedly I am quite naive with networking and need a step-by-step procedure.

Having to reboot, then turn around three times and throw a pinch of salt over my left arm is too complicated for me.

Any joy anyone? Help?

Thanks,

W.

Just call 156 from your handset, there is a team at Orange dedicated purely to these connectivity setups.

I am also having problems as described earlier - I can get GPRS to work perhaps 1 in 10 tries with the following circumstances:

I could not get GPRS to work at all until Orange ceased and re-enabled GPS to my C500.

I usually have to reboot before the phone will try and make a GPRS connection (where the two little data arrows appear next to antenna symbol), but more often than not I am told by the PDA that the remote modem has disconnected.

I have tried using and not using the additional init string - doesn't seem to make a difference.

If I do get a connection it works fine, but I will probably need a reboot to get another one later.

If I cannot get a GPRS connection and I switch the PDA to using a dial-up number it works straight away without me having to do anything to the phone.

If I cannot get a GPRS connection from the PDA via bluetooth, I also cannot get a GPRS connection using the phone to check emaill (phone says: 'unable to connect, verify you have network coverage and try again').

A colleague has the same phone and it always works fine for him

I'm using an iPAQ 4150 with WM2003.

Looks like flaky GPRS handshaking or initialisation?

Firmware/SIM update???

Anyone?

Got all this working (although I didn't seem to need either the extra init string, or a username and password, I just set up Dial-Up Networking using the Bluetooth manager on my Dell Axim, and set up an Orange GPRS connection with *99#).

However, in the "signal display" area of my Smartphone, I get a double headed arrow, whereas I'd expect to see a "G" symbol. Does this mean I'm using standard dialup WAP (ie charged per minute), rather than GPRS (charged per megabyte)?

Double headed arrow is what it should be - it replaces the GPRS icon.

However, what I wanted to say is that I am very disappointed with the C500. It either connects or not, I have spent many happy hours on the phone to the most patient guys in the world manning the Orange networking help at various levels (yes, I am definitely sticking with Orange!).

Usually resetting (battery out) was necessary and I could not get the Ipaq+C500 to behave consistently. All fine once, no joy another time. Rebooting to get it to connect seems a bit out of order. And because it does in the end, it clearly points to the software, not hardware fault.

At the same time the Ipaq connects to GPRS with Motorola V3 without a glitch, and did it first time I tried. This is quite annoying, as I was convinced it was the Orange GPRS that was temperamental.

I need GPRS only occasionally, but then it is really important for it to be reliable. Looks like with the Ipaq I might stick with the phone, which is a phone and does not pretend to be a PC. :-(

Perhaps Orange UK will release a ROM update, which fixes the GPRS issues sometime soon?

Your disappointed,

W.

Well, mine started to work again - but for how long...?

Orange tend to get you to go through the following:

1) Remove battery without switching off, wait 1 min and re-insert battery - this apparently causes the Orange network to drop all references to any existing/previous GPRS connections you have made so that when you re-attach to the network it's all re-done from scratch.

If no joy, try:

2) Hold down the home key for a few secs and a menu pops up - select 'Disconnect GPRS'.

If no joy, try 2 followed by 1

In my case, neither worked, but a couple of days later when I tried it, I got a GPRS connection first time!!

Looks like I might have to carry my old T68i with me just in case I need to use my PDA via GPRS for an urgent tech support call (I support servers on around 25 sites!).

Thanks very much for this.

Mine is working as well (for now) after flashing the new Orange ROM (this summer's 'edition').

Will report on the reliability of the new ROM in my setup. Are you on the new ROM?

Best,

W.

I'm still on the version the phone came with - 4.1.1.4. I have hesitated in loading the ROM update as some people seem to have had problems with other features getting messed up so I would be interested in what you find out. Thanks for the feedback.
