Guest Sage Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I have Destinator and am trying to install it to my smartphone.. it installs everything fine however it wants to put a 1.1mb file in my windows folder. which as you know uses separate memory space.. i have 7mb Program Memory free on my phone.. and only 700KB free of Storage Memory.. i need to free up some more so i can add it to the windows folder.. tho i always get file in use or read only etc. HELP PLS!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 It is not worth trying to add or delete file from the main Windows folder as it gets rewritten on every reboot of the phone. The program memory is basically the same equivelent of ram on the pc, it's used for running applications etc and not for used as storage.
Guest Sage Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 then why is my stupid program trying to put a file into the Windows folder where all these are kept?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I think you may be confusing the main Windows folder with the Storage \Windows folder as that will probably be where the app is trying to install to.
Guest Sage Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 (edited) nope no confusion. i can see most of the file in the \windows folder most of it becuase it cant fit the entire file by about 500kb.. if it was the Storage\windows folder then it would fit cause i have 10mb free. just out of interest i tried to install it on my m8s MPX200 and it has 8mb free in the Windows folder.. why does the c500 have so little free? Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 The phone will not show the free space in the main Windows folder as it is allocated. As for the C500 having less than the MPX200, presumably your friend is running 2002 and not 2003 as 2003 will use more physical memory than 2002. I am faily sure you are mistaking physical memory (system ram) for usable storage space and in doing so thinking the app is installing to the wrong folder. Another posibility is could you have the wrong version of Destinator ( ie PocketPC and not Smartphone) if not I would contact Destinator and point them to this severe bug (if it is) as this would make the app completey usless as it would need to be reinstalled on every reboot of the phone. The best thing you can do is install Task Manager from www.binarys.com and then you can easily see exactly what storage you have available. The information in Settings\About can be confusing and we have had many people in the past having similer problems because of this. I have simplified the discription of the following to help new members understand how the phone handles it's memory\storage. The only information you need is the following, Physical Memory, This is the same as the RAm on the PC and is used for running apps and games etc Storage, Used as a local hard drive as you would find on your PC as a location to store your SMS and emails as well as installing application to. Storage Card, This is the same as Storager except that it is removable and so can be changed as and when needed. I would also advise to install as many apps and games etc on the storage card and not on the phone to help save space.
