i have an imate sp3, my girlfriend has a motorola mpx220.

the mpx220 has lots of problems (the imate is great!) but the one that is bugging me most at the minute is gprs settings.

we both have o2 payg sim cards. both sims have been used previously to connect to the net using older phones. i can get full web access on my imate but when i copy the settings to the mpx220 it will only connect to wap sites.

the mpx220 has the cingular 1.3 rom (still with terrible camera quality, and rubbish in call volume)

has anyone got working settings for this 'not so smart'phone on o2 payg

Hi

This problem is NOT the phone’s – its 02’s.

First go to The Repository section of this forum and try the settings for o2

http://tinyurl.com/dp9q7

If that doesn’t help - try going to Moto direct and getting the settings sent to the phone (select “operator settings” and follow through….)

http://tinyurl.com/6dkep

Sign up to Yahoo Mobile

http://tinyurl.com/7o5tf

Finally wait for o2 to pull their plonkers out and support the phone!!!! (ring them, mail them, write them)

Hope (some) of this helps

Liz

PS the above - and Moto/Yahoo links - assumes you are in UK?

the settings in the repositry are not complete, and don't work with the mpx220.

o2 payg has ports blocked and you cannot access pop/smtp email or use msn messenger. o2 tech support have confirmed this to me directly.

you can, however, access web (not wap) sites by setting up the phone's proxy connection.

when i goto www.google.co.uk on the imate that's exactly what i get

when i goto www.google.co.uk on the motorola i get www.google.co.uk/xhtml

i cannot understand with the same operating system and EXACTLY the same settings the imate gets it right on the motorola doesn't

I’m on o2 contract – so there will be differences.

Can I suggest you post this question in “The Repository” section? Guys over there (esp Martin) will probably help you out.

I *Did* have major difficulties connecting and eventually combined “repository” settings with “trial” settings I got from O2 (after insisting and insisting that as I had a contract with them they “owed” me some service - even if my phone was not *officially* supported.)

I have set my Yahoo email account so that I can poll other accounts from Yahoo mobile and can read/receive/send mail via my MPX using Yahoo – not tried setting pop accounts directly as Yahoo was so easy to set up.

You can also sign up to MSM Mobile (£10.50 one only payment) which I think *should* give access to messenger (though that was available to me without signing up anyway – again contract difference? I don’t know) I do know that this phone is brill, I love it, and that asap I can get away from o2 I will

(10 months 2 weeks and counting….)

HTH?

thanks liz, i'll try posting in the repository.

just out of interest how do you find the camera/in call volume on the phone

the camera on my girlfriend's mpx220 is usable only in daylight, with the night setting and held perfectly still.

the video camera is unbelievably bad to the point of being unusable

the in call volume is very quiet despite the profile having all settings set to loud.

Stemill,

I think that is all down to the 1.3 Cingular Rom. Your best bet (as I did) is flash the newer 1.25 (yes I know the number is smaller but trust me, it is newer) onto the phone. Check the other posts on firmware upgrades in the MPX220 section on this site. Camera and call volume are certainly better (at least I think they are) since changing to 1.25

Its a phone, all these phones aren't very good at video or camera.

i don't expect high quality pictures from a phone i have a digital camera for that. but comparing the picture quality of my girlfriend's motorola to my imate (or previous motorola or nokia for that matter) is difference is vast.

when the motorola is in good strong daylight and set on night mode and held perfectly still (and the wind is blowing the right way!) you get a pretty good picture.

indoors the picture is speckly and dim.

the picture delay in night mode (caused by a longer exposure time i guess) is too long to be able to take spur of the moment pictures, and unfortunatley without night mode on the pictures are invariably rubbish.

the video camera is unbelievable bad no matter what the conditions. in low light situations all the phone can manage is blue speckles on a black background.

my imate takes great (for a phone) pictures and video under all circumstances. how did motorola get it so wrong?
