Guest PPCPassion Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 I have Audiovox SMT 5600 phone with mini sd card. Phone is unlocked (both SIM and application). I am able to install any unsigned application, however if I try to re-install upgrade of any application (e.g. trying to reinstall Xbar 2.6 on top of 2.5version), I get an error message,"cab file failed to install on your phone". I have tried to reinstall from PC, directly from cab file (after copying on SP). Then I thought of uninstalling the program and re-install all over again. Now, I can't even uninstall the application(s) as I get this error message," Unable to uninstall this application from your phone". It does not matter if the prog was originally installed in the ph memory or sd card, I get the same results. On the other hand, if I install a trial version of a prog, I have no problem uninstalling or re-installing the program. Probably, the naswer is very simple but I can't seem to find the solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated (besides doing a hard reset). Thanks
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 Hi, Isn't it that during a routine software upgrade, phone will prompt you to uninstall previous (old) version of the app first before installing the update? Once the old version was uninstalled, phone will now ask for the location (Phone or \Storage Card). If you continue with the installation, program will install but if you choose 'Cancel' , you'll get XXX failed to install. In your cae I think you should do the latter as that will remove traces of the program from your phone. There are programs though whose CAB installers are 'designed' to install directly to a location without prompting the user during the install process. Authors can set a 'do not allow user to select installation directory' command when compiling their cab file. Also, have you checked your \Storage\windows\AppMgr folder? I experienced such 'update failure' when I removed the contents of my AppMgr folder. Those *.tmp files (inside folders) are important as they contain installation informations like delete commands, registry changes, etc. HTH ;)

I fully understand the concept you explained about uninstalling old version/also program asking for location to install. I don't even get to that point. When I am installing app say from my PC, it will go thru the installation process and will give me the standart message of checking my phone screen for directions etc. But ehen I look at the ph screen, I already get the message, cab file failed to install (similar to as if I was trying pocket pc app on my SP). I did try deleting some files from app mgr (temp files etc.) but got the same results. You are right about some "left over" fragments of old program but it should not prevent me from uninstalling the old program?? As I mentioned before, I have absolutely no problem downloading trial version of any new app, installing and uninstalling. So far, I had experienced issues with uninstalling and/or re-installing Xbar, tweaks2k, neohand weather and ilium's newsbreak. I do appreciate your help. Thanks
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 From my experience, deleting the AppMgr folder of an app prevents me from Uninstalling (and even Re-installing) the program. My question now is: Do you still have 'Xetra xBar 2' folder inside \Storage\windows\AppMgr ? Kindly check your phone. ;)
Guest Deltabweb Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 Same problem for me. I have an orange spv flashed with a qtek 7070 rom, all unlocked. I have this problem with the snb_style skin i cant uninstall it nor reinstall it. I checked that folder and i dont have the snb_style folder, i checked the registry and the problem seems to be there. There's a key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\AppInstall called SnB - Style. I guess it's that that block the reinstall, I tryed to delete it but I have an error : "Unable to perform this operation". BTW I used PHM Registry Editor.

I also tried to get help from Frank (developer of Tweaks2k), he did give me some ideas but none worked. This problem started with one homescreen and "spread" to lot of other programs. Today, I bit the bullet and did hard reset and it seems to solve the problem. Sorry, I wish I had better news for you.
Guest Deltabweb Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Ok for the moment my phone still works perfectly i dont have the skin but at least everything else works ;) So i wont have to make a hardreset for the moment
Guest Disco Stu Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Another folder to check is \Storage \Windows \AppMgr \Install. Failed installations (eg. PPC software on Smartphones) dump files in here which block subsequent installations. If there is anything in there you can safely delete it.

Once I deleted all files under appmgr\install. I have absolutely no problem upgrading (re-installing) the program. Thanks for the tip. PZEE: Thanks for your help too. You guided me in the right direction but I was not smart enough to check the install folder. Thanks again.
Guest Deltabweb Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 YAY I solved my problem here is how i did it : Download SDA Application Unlock : http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=116301&st=20 Run it from ur pc with the sp connected, then dl PHM Registry Editor (i think u can find it at www.smartphone.net). Install the reg editor and launch it. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\AppInstall then find the key of the program that cant be reinstall nor uninstalled and delete it. Now you just have to reinstall the prog and ... IT WORKS 8) Well but you already solved the problem but if it can helps someone else ;)
