Guest drevil Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005  I'm just not sure what I need to do, I'd like to have the ability to use my C500 in France navigating those tricky roads - do I need a Tom Tom type thingy as well as the C500 or is there an app that will just work of the C500 - links etc and my eternal thanks will go with you to your grave (non refundable).
Guest Samsonite Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 (edited) you have more than one option... (sorry) you can purchase a dedicated box of trix that is ONLY a Satellite Navigation unit. Nothing to do with your phone and no further equipment required. Whether you can get one that works in France, i dont know but i would have thought so... The OTHER way is to buy a GPS receiver AND some software to run on your C500. You would load the application onto your phone, link to the GPS receiver and off you go. Whether the GPS unit connects to your phone via Bluetooth or a piece of wire is your choice. try this place for more info http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/ Its easy enuff to get mixed up with GPS and GPRS an' all that but GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is the American military network of satellites whizzing aroung good ol' Planet Earth that is allowed to be used by conmmercial recievers to triangulate on your position.. GPRS is General Packet Radio System and is a means of transferring information (data) to your phone using the mobile phone network. Whilst there are going to be applications that can use the mobile network to determine where you are and therefore work out traffic routes, i dont think they are properly available just yet.. hope this helps ya!! Guest Confucious Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Most GPS systems only come with Maps for one country and I'm not sure if you can buy additional maps for TomTom. You can for copilot though. Good luck.
Guest roma0803 Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 What's the main difference between TomTom and CoPilot? It seems with CoPilot you get a lot more maps, correct?
Guest Confucious Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 No, you only get your countries maps but you can buy extras with co-pilot. You can also buy the maps seperatly and use a different GPS receiver whereas with TomTom you can't buy them seperatly, aprt from that there isn't a lot of diff.
Guest Samsonite Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 TomTom also have their version of SatNav available in a dedicated box. I use CoPilot on my PDA and it is very good 99% of the time.. Sometimes it gets a bit confused but overall i'm chuffed with it.. Saves me loads of time in the car seat!
Guest roma0803 Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 I wonder though why the TomTom maps are sometimes more then 100MB bigger then the CoPilot maps.... @drevil: Also check out Mapopolis here. You can buy maps for specific regions and leave the rest. It's a lot cheaper. Though I believe the maps are less detailed. I don't known how long your journey will be, but the software is free and you can try the maps 9 day's for free.
