Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 So, Windows Mobile 5 is here! I know you're all dying to know what it looks like on your respective devices... so here's a sneak peek... courtesy of the Windows Mobile 5 emulator! Note the new sharper look across the board, the Segoe UI font (get used to it, Longhorn uses it too!), and the new 'grid' based Start Menu! Enjoy, and feel free to post any questions below ;) P Smartphone 176x220: Smartphone QVGA:
Guest MrBaz Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Being new to smartphones, this may come as a silly question to some. But will I be able to 'upgrade' the OS on my smartphone as easily as on my desktop PC? or will this only be availabe on new devices. many thanks in advance.
Guest squall Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 its possible to upgrade, but that would require your network to make an update available
Guest cr0bar Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 (edited) I see me on the screenie ;) ps. yeah Windows mobile 5 looks alright.. want it on my c500 *nodds* 8) Edited May 10, 2005 by cr0bar
Guest C00LH4ND Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 I see me on the screenie ;) ps. yeah Windows mobile 5 looks alright.. want it on my c500 *nodds* 8) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ;) I like, Hmm I wonder though what extra demand it will place on the c500's Proc or is it an upgrade for the c550
Guest Y-Wing Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 I like the increased amount of recently used applications and the grid style icons, should improve usability. They have definitely taken a leaf out of the Sony Ericsson book ;) Pity the new C550 will not have it installed, looks fantastic with QVGA. Big question is whether you will be able to update to it.
Guest Confucious Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Is this why we haven't had the update from Orange UK yet - They've been waiting for Windows Mobile 5 ;) I'll expect this to be released fro the C500 later on today then ;)
Guest Pondrew Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Is this why we haven't had the update from Orange UK yet - They've been waiting for Windows Mobile 5 ;) I'll expect this to be released fro the C500 later on today then ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> :P I like your thinking!
Guest muddy250 Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Is it on the Orange update site yet then.... ;) Do you reckon they'll make it available for the C500 or just leave us with 2003?
Guest rav1patel Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Wouldn't there be a problem with the C500 having a much lower resolution than 320x240? I'm guessing things would look a lot poorer.
Guest Confucious Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 You mean like in the pictures in Paul's post that started this thread?
Guest rav1patel Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Aaaah! Sorry bout that, I'm a bit slow. Doesn't look to bad at all. Still, it's all about the QVGA screen. I'm sure I could be tempted to miss the C550 if I can get this on my C500. Wait until the next real smartphone comes along.
Guest rav1patel Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Just about the same. But all of the home screen doesn't fit. You can see "outlook email" is cut off at the bottom. I'm guessing you'll have to scroll down to see more of the home screen.
Guest Alex_le_brit Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Hmmmm personally I don't like the start icons like that. It looks a bit to gimmicky to me, and a bit too much like all the other phones out there. Also will we be able to re-order the menu? I don't neccessarily want it to look like that. Can we have folders like on the existing OSes? But that's just me I'm a Smartphone Luddite.
Guest Chosl Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 Paul, this looks really yummy! One question though. The Windows Mobile 5 emulator images, are they available for the public or is it a MVP bonus ;) Where can I get my hands on them? ;) Screenshoots of WM5 based on the emulator images has been poping up like mushrooms so I figured that it is "somewhat" available. Thanks for all the great WM5 info!
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 They will be publicly available at some point. I don't like grid view personally, I prefer the old view (which I think can still be set somehow, but not sure?) The homescreen is only too large because i've selected the MSN one to show the new MSN plugin ;) P
Guest harrelson Posted May 10, 2005 Report Posted May 10, 2005 (edited) Samsung stand out to make big bucks with their i300. Gates mentioned it, one other technician called it 'sweet'..........hmm. I wonder when its going to be available :?: Edited May 10, 2005 by harrelson
Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Paul...sorry if I missed it...but which device are you running WM5 on??? I know it's a Smartphone...but which one?

Although if the grid system will still operate by pushing a number key I guess it won't matter too much. If it doesn't it means you'll have to scroll down AND across instead of the exissting down only. Grids just add another button push it seems to me.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Those pics are from the emulator... P
