Hi there,

I've got the Orange SPV C500, and I don't know if it is app-locked or not - is there any way to find out? I've been able to install all applications I have downloaded so far, even the unsigned ones (they just show a warning that they come from an untrusted source or something like that) so I was thinking that it's unlocked.

However, today I've tried to install CellTrack beta 5 and it says it doesn't have adequate permissions. So now I'm not sure.

The funny thing is that the phone came like this from Orange so I'm not sure if someone didn't mess with it before it was sold to me. For example, the orange try card was empty, and as I read in the manual today it should have contained some applications. There are also no templates in the caller ID application - where I think that there should be some default template preinstalled, but I could be wrong. So I'm not sure....

Thanks for any ideas on how to check whether it is locked or not.

Sounds like it's not application unlocked if you get the permissions error, there is no harm in going through the unlocking process again to be sure.

Was there any contacts or messages etc on the phone when you bought it?

It's locked. When I flashed my phone I could run *most* apps but when I tried celltrack I got the same permissions error. (Up to that point I'd assumed that it was still unlocked) I emailed [email protected] to ask for the unlocking app, which they sent after about 4 days, ran it and then I could install Celltrack.

I don't know why but some apps are fine if you're locked and some aren't.

Basically it's down to what part of the phone phone the application or homescreen etc is trying to access. The security is set differently to

previous smartphone models where any unsigned bit of software could not be installed unless you had done the unlock process.

I would take it up with Orange about the Try Card etc. Sound a bit suspct if you ask me. Presumably the phone was bought as new.

I read somewhere that phones that are sent back for wahatever reason, are recycled and resold? and if so, you may have one of these and things have not been reloaded before they have shipped it.

On the other hand it could all be very innocent, but I would certainly be on to them about it.

Thank you very much mupwangle and awarner for your explanation, I guess you're right that it has got something to do with different levels of locking. I'll try to contact [email protected], I hope they'll be able to send the unlock utility even if I bought my phone from Orange Slovakia.

I've sent them an e-mail, I'll see what they say. It was the last piece they had in the local Orange shop when I bought it (with 18 month contract), so perhaps they've been using it to show it to potential buyers or something like that. The card and battery has already been installed, but the protective film (is this the correct word for this?) was still there on the display.

Thanks again,

Rado

Thanks again for all your help. I have used the online unlocking application from Orange and I was able to unlock my phone after the second attempt: http://developer.orangews.com/orgspv/comdef.aspx

Now I was also able to install CellTrack, I'll play with it in the evening. ;)
