c500 to Outlook sync failing

Hi,

I have 195 contacts in my c500 which I am trying to get into my notebook's Outlook contacts. I am using ActiveSync (3.7.1) to connect over USB. The connection works fine, and ActiveSync detects that 195 contacts need to be synced. Now, when I click on sync, it very quickly syncs around 140+ contacts and then just hangs saying ... "Synchronizing". I am using Outlook 2002 on XP Professional (SP2).

I have tried syncing this multiple times, but everytime it manages to sync a particular number of contacts and then just hangs. If I turn it off now and look at Outlook, I do not find any contacts having been added there. Note: I can successfully sync other items like calendar. Only contacts is failing.

I tried switching off my firewall and virusscan, but that did not help. I am now completely clueless on what to try next. Any suggestions !??

Have you just upgraded from an earlier phone? If so you may have used the Orange backup feature. However one undocumented feature of Orange backup is that the data is (well, at least used to be) incompatible with Outlook, giving exactly the symptoms you describe. I never managed to find a way round it other than entering every entry manually into Outlook, clearing storage (resetting) my phone and then syncing.

Yes, thats exactly what I have done!! Upgraded from an E200 and used Orange backup. Thanks for the input.

I don't particularly look forward to typing in 195 entries manually though, but I guess thats what I have to do if no one has a better suggestion.

In this scenario, is there a way to export the c500 contacts to an ASCII file? I could then copy the file to my laptop and use the text editor to scan and make the entries outlook compliant and then import it into outlook....Just a random thought....

Give Orange Tech support a ring - they know about this problem and might have a work around (then again....)

Good Luck

PS Threy say you should sync from your old phone to Outlook and then from Outlook to your new phone - Useful Eh?

That might work - will try Orange tech support, though I am abroad now and its not nice to be on hold on an international call !!

And, on hindsight, yes I should have synced to outlook and then back to my c500...Feel like kicking myself now !! Dont have my old phone now..so it rules out that option :-(

It's not something you think about - you had a backup on Orange so why should you?. It's just there's doesn't work (How difficult can it be to fix?)

Hire a data entry person to type in your contacts for you and send the bill to Orange ;)
