It depends what you want to back up - to do everythin you need sprite backup. For your contacts/mail etc just use Activesync to sync with Outlook.

Your start menu can be copied and if you install all apps to a memory card all you lose is custom settings and email settings.

I want my next phone for free as well - but it isn't going to happen ;)
