Arrogant Microsoft knows better and removes synchronization over Wi-Fi possibility in ActiveSync 4.0 and Windows Mobile 5.0

Competition is adding features in new versions of mobile platforms. Microsoft is removing some features.

We have mentioned it already previously, that no longer ActiveSync over Wi-Fi will be possible in Windows Mobile 5.0, and now there is some addtional background information available about this serious mistake of Microsoft with regard to Wi-Fi synchronization:

the wifi/ethernet sync capabilities had to be removed in ActiveSync 4.0 for security reasons. When decision was made, there was plenty of disappointment internally and a number meetings where smart folks tried to find ways to keep the feature in without risking security and without slipping the schedule commitments we had made. Unfortunately, that ended up not being possible for AS 4.0.

To read more on this topic (rather lame justifications from Microsoft employees) see http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archiv.../22/420884.aspx

onclusion: again Microsoft behaves in a totally arrogant and disrespecting (for end customers) way: removes the feature that was heavily used by many people. While other corporations are innovating strongly (example: next version of iTunes will include native support for Podcasting, while next Windows Media Player and ActiveSync will not support it), Microsoft is removing features and not innovating at all - just imitating features that others had 2-3 years ago (as it is with camera API in Windows Mobile 5.0). Clearly Microsoft needs some urgent changes because something is wrong there.

What do you expect, MS gets dragged over the coals everytime they include too much, of course their innovation is being stifled.

I personally was v.happy to buy XP with Media Player bundled in, I think Real is such a pain in the preverbeal but didn't stop MS from being stung by the EU (that was a generlisation, I know there's more to the argument than that)

You want MS to keep features and such like then start sticking up for them in a public forum amd don't jump on the first MS bashing bus that drives past.

There are flaws in MS Smartphone that have been there since the first handset, and there is no sign of them being fixed. So you can't really be telling us that if we stick up for Bill he'll see us alright in the end!?

MS just move on. Find a bug and they just say "ah, there's a bug" and forget about it.

There's a fault with WM2003SE that can cause your phone to continuously send data over GPRS if you send more than 16Kb in one go. MS's response? Send smaller bits of data.

I would expect the WiFi limitation (if it's real, I never believe any/everything on msmoblies.com) to be there until at least this time next year. Telling Bill he's done a fine job won't change that.

Don't get me wrong telling him he's doing a fine job isn't going to help but the vast majority need to realise that pretty much all corporations are the same and just as shoddy, but I see MS making efforts towards fixing problems more than most, definately more effort than I have ever seen Orange apply (to use as one obvious example). It seems that nowadays you have to expect less gernerally and more cock-ups and the only way you can measure a companies effectiveness towards customers is the rectification of a problem, a sad state of affairs but that's the way it seems.

Innovation was mentioned the fact that they have a distinct lack of. I was merely trying to point out that if you keep kicking your opponent while they are down, how long before they just give up and stay down.

Maybe there is a security problem that cant be fixed yet without compromising something else.
