spv c500 - USB charging problem

My SPV C500 has decided that it wont allow me to charge it through the USB cable (my mains charger is long lost), i visited the orange shop and asked them if they would mind plugging it in a charger to make sure that it was a charging problem, they told me it was and suggested buying a new usb cable. My USB cable arrived today, but still no joy, ive tried installing activesync 3.8, it still wont recognise it. Anybody have any ideas? Do i need to have a little bit of life in the battery in order for me to switch the phone on and therefore recognise it?
