I am going to jump into the GPS market and I am looking for a good Bluetooth GPS for my Orange SPV C500 phone.

I have been looking at http://www.ebay.co.uk and found loads of matching but don't know which one will work with my C500 phone.

I am happy to spend up to £50 brand new but can go up to £60 brand new if it's a good GPS device that will work fine with my phone and is easy to set up. And also it need to work with TomTom 5 (whenever it comes out!)

Can anyone recommend one from the ebay listing above?

Many thanks.

I got one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5202000298&rd=1

from the guy that is currently selling them. It is a (or at least was when I got it) Polstar PBT-111. http://www.polstargps.com.tw/products/pbt-111.htm Works just fine with a C500.

The nice thing about it is that it take three AAA batteries, which can be charged in the unit, or in a regular battery charger. Some GPSRs have fixed batteries which are not user serviceable, so once the battery finally dies, so does the GPSR. It's not the latest type of receiver, but it does seem to work well - it doesn't get a fix as quickly as my garmin GPS-V, but it is still resepectable. I'm very happy with it. If you've got a bit more cash, it might be worth taking a look at Expansys, who are selling these:

which I've heard good reports about.

Good luck

Andy

Remember that TomTom is only sold with a Bluetooth GPS Receiver of its own. So there is no point in buying one seperately.

Thanks. I just has a look at his listing and found a similar but different one

What's the difference between them? I can't see very much! ;)

Anyone else recommend something different?

Really? That's a shame... is it due to their licensing? How much does it cost?

Not seen one of those before. It might be worth asking on the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk for opinions.

As for tomtom, the new mobile version (5) will apparently be sold without a GPSR, but initially it is only being sold with a GPSR.

As something of GPS nerd (I own 4 models, including two bluetooth models, have used many others), I can provide some feedback.

If you want the best in consumer-grade GPS technology right now, the thing to get is a Sirf-III based receiver. The Sirf-III chipset provides absolutely fantastic reception. If difficult reception conditions are something you will encounter (urban canyon, wilderness canyons, dense foliage coverage), then a Sirf-III based receiver will be worth it. I have two bluetooth GPS units, one is based on the Sirf-II ST chipset (a Teletype), and the other is based on the Sirf-III (a Globalsat BT-338).

The Globalsat BT-338 is just amazing. It's small, the battery life is superior for a bluetooth GPS (17 hours), and the reception blows away anything else (except for other Sirf-III receivers:-). I use the BT-338, an Audiovox 5600, and maptech's Outdoor Navigator program.

I had a Tomtom which worked well though I did have problems setting up both car kit and the TT BT unit. I replaced this after a drop  with a 16 sat BT GPS that was for sale on Ebay it arrived from US in 5 days and works perfectly, all for £50 in postage. ;)

I was also looking for a Bluetooth GPS receiver and software for my SPV C500. I found the following on ebay:

Tom Tom on ebay

I know it's not the latest version of the software, but GBP 5.99 for the software without receiver compared to EUR 299 for the latest version of the software complete with receiver etc. from the Tom Tom website seems too good to be true.

Does this version of the software really work with a SPV C500, and is it likely to be pirate software at this price?

Yes of course, it's pirate software and is illegal. Don't pay them a penny!!

Personaly I think TomTom are the pirates by increasing thier prices by 5%

But regarding the older version...Yes it will be compatable with a non TomTom GPS reciever

The thing with TomTom Mobile (pre- v5 which has just been released) is that it was built to work with only TomTom GPS receivers. We sell 16 channel GPS receivers on eBay and on our website, and have all the required patches to get TomTom working with our GPS receiver.

To download the TomTom replacement files for non-TomTom receivers, go to http://www.inter-activeinformation.com/GPS/TomTom.zip. Instructions are included in the zip file, and please remember to back-up your memory card before replacing any files !!

The C500 and E200 will work with our GPS receiver, but there are some extra tweaks that need to be made (this includes downloading and installing the TomTom Traffic update from the TomTom website).

Good luck !!
