Guest Alex_le_brit Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 The connection from phone to PC is always refered to as a serial connection, even though it plugs into USB, how is that so? Also I see you can now get standalone serial WiFi and Bluetooth adaptors, that need no software running on the device itself. Could one of these be used to give WiFi compatibility for a phone without it? What does anyone reckon?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 It is a serial connection, that uses the USB port, there was actually a serial connector for the pc available at one time but I've not seen one in a long time. Without seeing one of these devices I could not say if they would work or not but I would edge my bets on no as you would still need to be able to use Activsync.
Guest MrCeee Posted June 2, 2005 Report Posted June 2, 2005 Hello, USB is a serial connection (Universal Serial Bus). The port also has pins for RS232 aswell allowing connection to a PC via serial for activesync or connecting to other serial devices such as GPS recievers. Hope this helps, Chris

Hence no need for any software on any device. Obviously this would put paid to the idea of using a WiFi connection to connect directly to a modem for instance, however there no reason why it couldn't be used to provide a connection between phone and PC via activesync. of course a lot of phones have bluetooth onboard anyway, butthese units do have a much higher range than a phone.
