Guest geekycomputerdork Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 This may seem like a long post for a first time user but I felt I really should share this story because it could happen for you: In december of 04 I ordered my MPX220 and couldn't wait for the phone to arrive. Upon recieving the unit I had problems couldn't hear anything the phone would freeze all the time and it really became a very frustrating issue. Needless to say had the phone exchanged through cingular. This time everything was smooth sailing until the middle of may when my phone would just start turning off if the lid was closed to hard. Now by to hard I mean just kinda pushing the lid down and letting the springs/tension just finish closing it. So after a week of not recieving phone calls cause the phone would just power off i decided RA here i come. Called up cingular and let them know what was going on and after about an hour of try this try that ( Which might i add who here is so dumb when it comes to a problem you don't try the basics. Cause that's really all they had me do. If only there was a "I'm a GEEK Copp Out where you could just get to another GEEK and have your problem solved rather than sitting there being treated like a 5 year old." After problem verification they said that they would ship me a "Refurb". Sweet!!! First question I ask is "When can i expect it?" And instead of three to four days i hear this "Well looks like... Oh hmmm.... Um... Um.. Let me... Ok well it appears the phone is on back order." Now the wheels are churning and i have to refrain from yelling "Wait what? I pay for a service that i can only use half the time cause the broke ____ phone you sent me won't stay powered on." Instead I decide to refrain from just terrorizing the hell out the lady on the other side of the phone and decide i will just wait and see how long it will take. Three days past and nothing but me getting more and more upset. Finally day four. Goodnews! Gmail notification on my Broke MPX220 says You've got mail and bamn. Phone is on its way. New phone arrives on June 1st and instantly I start getting back into my MPX220. I had the day off so i just go nuts online looking in forum after forum of what people think is the latest and greatest when it comes to gadgets, programs, configs, homescreens and the usual stuff. Digging around on MoDaCo i find a ROM update for my phone so instantly i'm like lets get this thing to 1.43 and when I do everything is sweet. Volume is louder, Menus are faster, and I'm just peachy keen. Yet for some reason that when things are going good you just trip and land in a pile of S***. So after two days of use I noticed that my motorola bluetooth headset would take longer to connect to the phone and had a tendency to cut off every other word. Instead of Freakin out Man i remained kinda calm and just attempted reconnecting it and Bada Boom Bada Bam PROBLEM STILL EXIST. I decide to ignore it for a little bit and try just using the phone's speaker but with the new update anything past half volume causes everyones voice to crackle and pop. This might i add is really annoying. With the volume it just seems like ther is no happy medium it's either to quiet or it's crackling. Well I'll take that back there is a happy medium its called a dark quiet room with your mpx220 at half volume and everything sounds perfect. But who wants to live that way. Windows Mobile 2003 that's right Mobile not sit in front of your XP 64 bit computer and use your SMARTPHONE that was Mobile so no dark room for me. After just 4 days of frustrating 1.43 problems i decided to call cingular and find out what I can do. After only 20 mins of talking with the Return Exchange people they are like well yeah that is an issue we have started to hear about from our customers. In my head I'm thinking what are you going to do for me and before I could say anything the rep was like well my systems show that we no longer are supporting the MPX220..... Moment of silence  (cingular has killed off the MPX220). But wait no more support so what are you going to do for me?!?!? And just them almost as if an angel were speaking on the phone she says and i quote..... "We are now offering the Audiovox SMT5600 as a replacement for that model" As i yell SWEET!! The phone i have been wanting and now i don't have to pay anything at all and it's going to be expressed shipped. Should be here Tuesday. So for those of you with Cingular and are frustrated with the MPX220 and what it has become you now have an option and it won't cost you anything except maybe their $25 dollar processing fee. I was so extatic that I had to share the news.......
Guest Pondrew Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 Good to hear it all worked out in the end. Hope you're happy with the Audiovox...
Guest Chaser81 Posted June 6, 2005 Report Posted June 6, 2005 Its a shame that there were so many problems with the Mpx220, I really liked that phone and probably would have bought one myself had they been more widely available. Guess we will have to wait and see if Motorola plan on bringing out anything to replace it with. Motorola do seem to be more into Linux based devices at the moment however.....
Guest pgaston Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I followed this experience - hallelujah! Rid of that MPX220 and - get this - next day I have the AudioVox SMT5600 in my hands!!! (Okay, I did pay the $7.50 for express delivery - but it was free for 'next week'...) Whatever happened to the Cingular I know? First blush, looks good (but so did the MPX220). Does come with headphones, a nice plus as I listen to streaming radio using the data plan (www.radioshowlinks.com...) Best of luck to all w/ MPX220s (hint hint)

I got mine back in november and I don't know if they are going to replace it.

Guest SARK9 Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 I also just switched to the 5600. I had the MPx200 two years ago, upgraded to the 220 in November and had the volume issues and then randomly, about once a week, the volume would quit working altogether when placing a call or during a call. I finally got sick of the volume issue and called. First they offered a bluetooth headset (so didnt want to walk around with that on all day waiting for the phone to ring), then they offered a nonsmartphone with a refund, but any new phone would cost full price. So I told them I needed to replace a smartphone with a smartphone. They then came back and offered to switch with the 5600. I agreed, paid the 7.50 express shipping, and had a new phone the next day! I can say that the 5600 is EXCELLENT. Very small, fast, the volume is GREAT, I can actually hear my phone ring while driving in the car or across the house. I can also hear in restaurants and noisy areas now. The customer service was excellent as well. I highly recommend switching. I believe the November 2004 and that era MPx220s are eligible for the exchange. They mail you the 5600, you simply put your sim in the new phone (don't forget your SD card), and call Cingular to switch the insurance. You mail your phone back, postage paid first class, (within 14 days or they charge you full price for the 5600) and you are done. Simple and excellent. Good luck!
Guest MrMpx220 Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 now this is only possible if you have insurance? i heard that they didnt cover the blackberrys/smartphones? so you just call up complain about the phone... i have my own little complaints.... (i am not trying to "milk the system") and they swap you phones?
Guest SARK9 Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 I called to ask if they had the new ROM so I could upgrade and fix the volume problem. They said that they did not do that any longer and asked me to read the device number and when I purchased it. I got the phone in late November when they first came out and it fell under the versions with verified volume issues. Therefore they offered me solutions to fix the problem. I was actually very surprised at how easy and quick it was to reach a solution. Now, had the 5600 not turned out to be as great as it is I would be complaining here rather than praising, but it is a very good phone to switch out with (in my opinion it is better than the 220, but that is just personal opinion). I do not know if this offer applies to later versions of the MPx220 where the volume issues were reportedly improved upon. It is worth a phone call if you have legitimate issues with the productivity of the phone. Good luck! I have lockline insurance on the phone, but they did not ask if i did so I do not know if that is a factor (though they could have read it off of their screen and not had to ask me).
Guest Godfather Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Ya I had the same issues with that MPx220. Got it at bestbuy late last year and first off started with volume problems. I tried 4 different phones from bestbuy but all were the same. So I just returned it and got the SMT 5600 which is by far the best smartphone i have ever used!! ;) I was waiting for the MPx to come out but I heard awhile ago they canceled it. It was too old and out of date, because they took to long. So I am now hearing rumors that Motorola is working on a Razor smartphone. (JUST A RUMOR I AM HEARING!!) I do hope it is true, because that would be so sweet!!
Guest Thraka Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 I called and told them that i had problems with camera quality, phone volume quality, and that the screen would delay on refresh when I got a call and I missed a lot of calls because it would not answer until the screen was finished updating. She had me reset the device and she called it. Of course the screen came up right away on that call (it's random) but i delayed in answering hehe. She talked the whole way through like the replacement was a MPX220 so I was getting really worried. Then at the end when she actually entered into the computer, she said that it was on backorder and I could wait if I wanted. I told her that a had lots of friends with the phone and they all have the same issue and Cingular offered to replace the phone with another. She said she would talk to her boss really fast and instantly came back with offering the 5600. I said yes!! They took 3 fricken days just to initiate the 2 day shipping so I'm still waiting on it. I am interested in knowing if Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available for the phone...
Guest Madeye Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 Does anybody know if there's any truth in the Razor smartphone rumour? Or indeed if it's a load of monkey marbles? I've never been a fan of flip phones but the razor V3 is nice. They do a candybar version too I believe. Either would be nice with a WM OS on... ;)

Guest joschmoblo Posted July 7, 2005 Report Posted July 7, 2005 In case anyone is interested ... just wanted to give you an update on the mpx220 / 5600 trading with Cingular. My friend and I both have an mpx220. She called the other day to have it switched because she was having issues with it (imagine that). Of course by default, they sent her out another mpx220. I called in to the warranty department today with complaints about my phone. When I called, I specifically asked if I could replace the phone with another model since I had heard of all the problems that were happening with this phone. A guy gets on the line a few seconds later and offers me the Audiovox instead. I tried to call back and switch my friend's phone out for her shortly after, and the guy I talked to that time was willing to do so, except for the fact that her phone was already in the mail. They are now replacing the phones with the mpx220's again, but from my impression, if you request, then they may offer you the 5600. I know I had been reading that Cingular stopped offering the 5600 as a replacement, but I figured it was worth a shot, and it worked out to my advantage. So for anyone interested in trying to switch, you should try the same and hopefully it will work. FYI- I have Lockline and the phone is still under warranty. However my friend's phone was only still under warranty and they were going to give her the same trade as I got.

Guest xxsteppinrazorxx Posted September 19, 2005 Report Posted September 19, 2005 Just a quick note to all...Smartphone are considered PDA's by Cingular and not covered by insurance. You may want to save a few bucks a month if you have a Smartphone by cancelling insurance
Guest kingraf01 Posted September 22, 2005 Report Posted September 22, 2005 I read that in another forum as well. From what I understand is that the MPX220's they replace it with are with an upgraded ROM. 1.47 I think. I'm hoping that means that they haven't given up on the 220's and will eventually have an WM5 rom update available? I've gone ahead and updated to 3.50 and haven't had any volume, bluetooth, or random shut-off issues.
