Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 GADGETotW: EastGear SD WiFi Card Welcome to Gadget of the Week! Today's Gadget of the Week is a great one for HTC Magician variant owners (MDA Compact, iMate Jam, SPV M500, O2 XDA II mini)... a real revolution in SD WiFi cards! What is it? It's an SD WiFi card... plug it in your device to bring it to life with WiFi connectivity! There's no memory on board with this card, but wow it is SMALL! Their sales pitch... Introducing the world's smallest Wi-Fi SD card with the shortest antenna (only 6mm). Provides Wi-Fi 802.11b Wireless LAN functionality to PDAs with SD slots. Also has one of the fastest transfer speed (11Mbps) and lowest power consumption (185mA). Perfect for PDAs without built-in Wi-Fi capability like: * O2 Xda II / II mini * i-Mate Jam * Qtek 2020 / S100 * Dopod 818 * T-Mobile MDA II/Compact The Computer Devices Wi-Fi SD surpasses the SanDisk Wi-Fi SD card hands down in terms of: * Antenna size (almost half the size) * Wi-Fi transfer speed (almost twice as fast) * Power consumption (use 40% lesser power) * Compatibility (guaranteed to work with all PocketPC 2003 & above) I have one of these cards, and a Socket WiFi card (probably it's main competition), and it's much smaller, better performing and uses less battery... it's pretty amazing! And to top it all off, it's GREAT value! Where can I get it? You can pick up the WiFi card at the EastGear Website, for just under US$ 85! Why do I want it? If you have a Magician device, or perhaps an Eten M500, that you would like to add WiFi to, then you should seriously consider this card! The real downer thus far with WiFi SD cards has been how much they protrude from the device, but this one hardly does. ;) Here's a great pic of it courtesy of Arne at theunwired.net: I have a question... Something else you want to know? Just reply to this post with any questions :D P
Guest Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 With a recomendation like that, I'm tempted, as I've been considering one of these for a while now. Was it the Eastgear website you got yours from, Paul? Just wondering what they're like to actually order from, being as they're in Singapore. TIA, Pete.
Guest elvie Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Just had a look at the Easygear Website and it's got in the specification: OS Support: Windows Mobile 2003 (Windows CE 4.X) & Linux So presuming that this will run on the SPV E200? Doesn't actually say anywhere that it runs on the SPV E200 [unless I'm blind], can we confirm that it will? Can't find the post with the C550 specs [ok, didn't look very hard], but presuming that his will have the mini sd slot. Is/will there be any products out that will WiFi enable this phone? TIA
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Yeah, I bought mine from the EastGear website. Don't think it'd work on the E200... and wouldn't expect to see WiFi addons for the C550. P

TIA <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Socket is now listing drivers for the Sagem MyS7 to go with their SD WiFi card, but we don't yet know anyone who's tried these on an E200. Space did, and the drivers installed fine, but then he didn't actually have the right card to try it with as he only had a combined SD WiFi and Memory Card to try. As the Sagem and the E200 run the same OS it should be do-able, but are you prepared to take the risk? Perhaps it'd be possible to negotiate a deal where they'd refund you if you found the drivers didn't work? After all if they do work, they can list the E200 on their site and you'll have done them a favour. I've just Pm'd Paul actually cos I notice he's got a Socket SDIO WiFi card, and being mr gardget I figure he might still have an E200.
Guest Arbait Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 This one dream about a mini sd WIFI card to use with my SPV C500... i know, not enough space, but what about a combination custom battery with WIFI built insided and a fake mini sd as connector?
Guest Maikeul Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 will this work for pocket pcs that are not phone editions? eg, if I bought a Matsunichi I-mat, and this thing, would I be able to use wi-fi?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted June 11, 2005 Report Posted June 11, 2005 It should do! jlowap pointed me to this card at eBuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=89714 which he owns and seems to be the same as the EastGear (it works with the EastGear drivers), and comes in at a storming £22.99. P
Guest thereaperman Posted June 13, 2005 Report Posted June 13, 2005 god thats cheap, most sd wifi cards are over £50.00, i lost mine last week(ie i put the thing down after chainging it for my tomtom card and can not find it any were) so this looks like a bargin

Guest Quotient Posted July 4, 2005 Report Posted July 4, 2005 GADGETotW: EastGear SD WiFi Card Welcome to Gadget of the Week! I have a question. Will this card work with an MPX 220 smartphone as well? The MPX220 has an SD I/O port. Lack of a driver is the main problem. Maybe some day ... with WM5.

I need it shipped to the Netherlands.
Guest Markkyboy Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Hi guys, my 2nd post in the forums!..i wondered if anyone has used or owns a MINI SD WIFI Card that has worked or is working in an Orange SPV C500?...i've seen an article with one of these cardds being placed in the back of an Orange C550,but the cut-out in the C500 is only the right size for mini s memory, the wifi card looks like its longer in length, therefore wont seat properly?..am i wrong?..anyone else know anymore? Regards Markkyboy
Guest Confucious Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 According to http://www.buygpsnow.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=612 it is compatable with the C500, The C550 has the same slot so if it works in that it should work with the C500. Expansys sell it but I'd get them to confirm compatability before you buy. Also WiFi EATS batteries and of course if you use one you can't have a memory card as well. Since I got flat rate unlimited data I haven't used WiFi on my Universal at all. Good luck.
