SPV C500 pass-through connection problem

Hi

I have a SPV c500 and I have just configured it to access my exchange mail account over GPRS. This works find but I want to syncronise my emails whilst my phone is connected to my laptop via the usb cable.

Having done some research in the forums I have gone into active sync > tools > options > rules and made sure "Pass through connection:" is set to 'The Internet' On my handset I haev gone to Settings < Data Connections and set the Internet Connection to 'Pass Through Connection' and 'Automatic' but none of these settings seems to have fixed the problem. On the handset in active sync i get the error message

Syncronisation failed due to a communications failure Try again. Error Code: Internet_31

Somebody please HELP! The problem is drivnig me nuts.
