Hi all -

I've unlocked my AT&T-branded SMT in an attempt to use the same phone for my two mobile accounts - one of which is with AT&T and the other is a German-based Vodaphone account.

After inserting the Vodaphone chip into the phone (in Germany) a couple of strange things happen (or more correctly, don't happen...)

1) It takes 4 minutes to log into the Vodaphone network (phone just sits there "searching").

2) Incoming calls get sent directly to voicemail

3) Outgoing calls show the "calling" screen for a split-second and then the screen changes to the call-timer for about 5 seconds before reverting back to the homesceen; and then the phone goes back to "searching" for the Vodaphone network.

Am I going to be able to use my new phone in both the US and Germany???

Thanks,

Harry

Your AT&T phone is a US Edition, this means it operates in 850/1800/1900MHz GSM bands. In Germany and in Europe general, the 900MHz band is used instead of the 850MHz and this is the reason it takes so long for searching and losing signal cause it is picking the "GSM band ends" of the 850MHz band due to an overlap of the 850 and 900MHz signal

For the other problems you should check with the call forwarding options in phone settings..

As far as i can remember there was a 1800 network in germany but i can't recall the name. So it should work on that network (e-plus) or something like, for all other i don't think so. You can try to flash c500 sw into if it can make your phone to operate on 900 instead of 850 MHz 900 but i am not sure if it's working or not.

Btw what was the purpose to establish GSM850 if there was already GSM900 for many years all over the world, besides to close the market ? Any other reason ?

In the U.S. the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies were already in use, so they opted for 850MHz and 1900MHz instead.

Thanks for the help everyone. One more question though, is there an easy way to switch between the 850 and 900MHz networks? I travel between Europe and the US quite often and don't think that flashing software back-and-forth is really a viable option. I have a feeling that this is wishful thinking but can the network settings be changed quickly and easily?

Thanks again!

You need a quad band phone to do that. And by flashing your phone to a European firmware will NOT make the phone to operate in 900MHz band.
