headphone adapter question

so i am ready to purchase or make a 2.5mm-3.5mm adapter so i can use some decent headphones but i have a question

the phone has a proprietary 4 conductor for the headset features. if i just want to put heaphones in it will a regular 2.5mm plug work?

also anyone know of any places that dont charge a lot and actually has some in stock? (and ships to the states)
