Guest joonnyx Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Hi, I am new to this forum, Have been using phone for a month now and find it to be one of the better phones i have used albeit that its slightly showing its age now. What i want to know is where do i store .wma files on the phone if i want to use it as a ring tone. I have filled my phone with .wma to the brim and am now unable to send messages. I noticed in the resource manager that my storage memory has 10.09 MB of free space. Can i stor my wma files there and access it as a ring tone? If i store the wma files on my sd card, do i need to tweak the registry to point the phone over to the sdcard location for ringtones, if so how do i do this?? Thanks alot guys, your advice is appreciated
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Welcome to the site ;) wma ringtones should be placed in Storage\Applicatin Data\Sounds but you do need to have the dodgy 2003 OS installed to be able to use wma. I presume you want to do this for custom ringtones and you will need to alter the registry for them to be on the storage card but this can make the phone unstable and prone to crashing which can result in the phone needing a hard reset.
Guest joonnyx Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Thanks for the prompt reply awarner, so what u are saying is the best place to store custom tones is in Application Data > Sound and if i store it into my Sdcard i would need to tweak the registry and this will sometimes cause the phone to crash if not done properly. But my phone is only left with 1.88MB on the flash drive but i do have 10MB in the phone memory..Is this phone memory actually a storage space or a ROM??
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 The information in Settings\About can be confusing and so the best way to see what memory etc you have available on the phone is to use Task Manager from www.binarys.com this will show you your memory status which is as follows, Physical Memory, This is the same as the RAM on your computer and is used for the running of the OS and applications. Storage, This is your actual space on the phone which is the same as the hard drive on your computer, this is where your SMS, homescreens etc are stored. Storage Card, says it all this is the SD card. This memory is allocated and the size can not be changed as you can on the Pocket PC. As for tweaking the registry it's not wether the alteration is done correctly or not but the nature of how the phone deals with the storage card, for example if you remove the card or if the battery gets low then the phone will stop reading the card then when you get a call it can not locate the ringtone. Any problems with the registry the will try to do a self repair, this involves the registry being rewriten so you then have what we call a partial reset where your settings go back to their defaults. After a partial reset it is then advisable to do a proper hard reset as partial resets cause problems of their own. Personally I would not apply this tweak to the storage card but on phones like the C500 where the card is internal and uses less power the risk of problems are reduced.
