Guest jimmel Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 I just purchased an Audiovox SMT 5600 because of some rave reviews from friends. The look and feel of it is great. However, Cingular customer servide knows even less about this phone than I do. I'm trying to get hold of another manual (missing CD) but until then, I have a few questions: 1. I have a Palm IIIc (OS 2.0). Does anyone know of any good 3rd party software for conversion of calendar and contacts to import to Outlook so I can sync it with the 5600? If I can do this once, I'll just stop using the Palm, but I'd prefer to not have to enter everything all over again. 2. I have a custom ringtone that I beamed over from my old phone. It's there because I can play it from the 'my sounds' folder. However, I'd like to set this up as my voice mail ringtone. When I try to associate it, it's not there. Are ringtones for VM in a different location than other ones? Also, any suggestions about sites for good tones for this phone? 3. Yesterday, I got activesync to work and it synced with my hotmail account. However, it synced in the 200 or so email addresses I have and now my contacts page is overwhelming. Any way to undo this or better organize? Thanks.
Guest wsuplee Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 jimmel, a manual for the advsmt5600 can be found on the audiovox website (pdf). the palm 2.0 is probably too old to work with outlook xp or 2002 so i don't know if a third party software but if you can export your palm data using palm desktop, you might be able to import it back into outlook or if you can find an older version of outlook or express your palm will sync with then do the export/import. for vm, there are a list of tones under storage (not removable)/application data/sounds. you can drag and drop songs or tones there and then choose them as tones. for sync, go to sync/menu/options wich gives you three choices: mobile schedule, pc settings, and server settings. under server settings it will let you customize what you sync, how far you go back on calendar items, etc. the same works when syncing to your pc. hope this helps.
Guest sprocket87 Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 (edited) wsuplee covered them all pretty well. A couple other tidbits: The Audiovox SMT5600 manual in PDF form that he was referring to can be found here (direct PDF link so you don't have to go searching on their site): http://www.audiovox.com/manuals/owners/SMT 5600 Manual.pdf Also, regarding the Hotmail sync with way too many messages, wsuplees suggestion is a good start. I use Gmail and connect to it similarly, using POP3. However with Gmail, I can access it from a PC and go to my account settings, and change when I want to allow my POP3 messages to be downloaded from. For instance, I can set my entire inbox to be accessible via POP3 remotely, or just any new ones from today on. So its sort of a similar feature to the Messaging settings on the smartphone, but its a server-side delimiter instead of client side. I ended up doing restrictions on both my Gmail account and my smartphone messenger settings to get it just right. I don't know if hotmail allows you to change any settings for POP3 remote access, but if you login on the website and go to your account settings, that's probably where you would find it. Oh - and regarding the ringtones: You do know that the 5600 can play MP3 and WMA files as ringtones, don't you? IMO, using polyphonic MIDI tones is a waste of time and space now - music is SO much better. You probably have plenty of MP3s to put on there already - if not, just rip one off a CD that you own. Anyway, have fun, the 5600 ROCKS! Just wait until you start putting video on it ;) Edited June 16, 2005 by sprocket87
Guest sprocket87 Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 Oh, and I totally know what you mean about Cingular knowing jack-squat about the phone. I bought it THE FIRST DAY the store carried it, May 7th. It was actually the only one they were sent, and I ended up teaching the Rep all sorts of stuff about it ;) Mine didn't come with a manual either - what's up with that anyway?? Ah well, its well worth it!!
Guest jimmel Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 For the ringtone, it is a file I got from a CD and I can assign it to be my standard ringtone, so I know it is there. However, I can't assign it to be my voicemail alert, which is what I want to do. It's in the directory storage/application data/sounds. Any idea? wsuplee covered them all pretty well. Guest sprocket87 Posted June 20, 2005 Report Posted June 20, 2005 Ooh I see. Well I don't know why it wouldn't work the same way as the ringtones, but you're right - I don't see my "storage" MP3s appearing on my voicemail alert sound choice list either. I suspect that putting the sound in your \windows directory should do it though.

Guest jimmel Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Ok, I must be overlooking something incredibly simple, because I'm just not getting this. I have a song from a CD, I saved it in 2 formats (WAV, WMA) and put copies of it everywhere on my phone. I can select it as a standard ringtone (and hear it play quite nicely), but I cannot get it as my voicemail alert. Any other suggestions? Ooh I see. Guest sprocket87 Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Maybe you can't use audio files for VM alerts, dunno. If putting it in the \windows folder doesn't work, then I don't know...

Works for me. Oh, and they have to be a specific type of WAV. I think it was PCM. I use Goldwave to edit WAV's so I can save WAV's in many different file types, kbps, etc... I'm on another computer atm so i cant check but I will try and check tomorrow.

I've already tried PCM, 16 bit in that folder and it didn't work, so I'm hoping it's one of the other types. If you find out what you used, please post back.

I downloaded all my alert sounds from this link.. http://www.modaco.com/best_text_message_tones-t204490.html Theres some good sounds here.
