I read somewhere last night that a c500 needs activesync in order to charge via the USB port.

I've just tried it on another computer (without activesync) with the usb cable that came with it and it's true.

Now I've just modified my old Ericsson car holder to take a usb cable so I can charge it in the car.

I left the larger plug on, so I could share the one car charger that has a usb socket.

This obviously won't work now.

Does anyone know what activesync does to get the C500 charging and could it be emulated in software on the C500 itself?

thx

I'm not sure that you have to do anything to get the C500 to charge, after all the mains cable uses the same connector as syncing and theres no clever ActiveSync software on your mains adaptor! I think it might be more to do with the way the PC needs to know to put current out of a USB port (since theres a potential hazard in putting out current all the time to devices that don't need it), and ActiveSync is packaged with the device driver that tells your PC "I can handle power".

Obviously I'm no expert, and anything you do at your own risk but as long as theres current on the USB cable all the time it's plugged into your car, I think it will charge your phone even without ActiveSync.

Interestingly enough, I left it plugged into my computer last nght and when I switched the computer on this morning, it started charging even though activesync didn't register it as being there.

So why doesn't it charge on my other machine?

Strange.

I have a similar problem.

At home, if the phone is quite low on charge, it will not charge. The red light goes on for a few seconds and then the phone thinks it's fully charged and stops. If the phone still has around 80% charge, the phone will start charging right up to 100%.

I do not have the same problem at work though.

Both are via the data cable and both have Active Sync installed.
